American Man Lyrics

Freedom the naked power
Weakened by the ages
Raped but not forgotten
All its supple secrets
Gods and liberations
Those that try to use it
Are those that try to sheath it
Wide awake

Yes I am the American Man (x4)

Free men
Haunted by the music
Ghosts of generations
Beat the drums for freedom
Those who toiled and suffered
Now those they try to smother
Wide awake

Yes I am the American Man (x4)

Where to begin
Bred to win
Where do I go
The soul worn off my skin
So...
I cut out the hole
In my soul I know is you
So are we ready
Ready to lose
I know I feel, feel, feel
Inside the walls
Inside the walls
The iron walls protect the souls
Of my old boots

Yes I am the American Man (x8)

First off, great song. There should be more comments!

Anyway, here's my incomplete interpretation:

"Freedom the naked power Weakened by the ages Raped but not forgotten All its supple secrets Gods and liberations Those that try to use it Are those that try to sheath it Wide awake"

This part seems to be about how so much of our country's origin is misconstrued, such as the Constitution and Bill of Rights. It seems to talk about how people sort of throw around the whole It's-a-free-country sort of idea (Raped but not forgotten). And it even says "Gods and liberations" That couldn't be more clear, free religion and other civil liberties.

"Free men Haunted by the music Ghosts of generations Beat the drums for freedom Those who toiled and suffered Now those they try to smother Wide awake"

That's an obvious reference to American History and the founding fathers and how they "toiled and suffered" It's saying that current leaders are smothering this fire that the founders had created.

"Where to begin Bred to win Where do I go The soul worn off my skin So... I cut out the hole In my soul I know is you So are we ready Ready to lose I know I feel, feel, feel Inside the walls Inside the walls The iron walls protect the souls Of my old boots"

I'm not so sure about this part. It seems almost like they're talking about how we have so much power (Bred to win) and we can basically do anything, but it also seems kinda like it's talking about how we might take a fall (So are we ready, ready to lose)... possibly referring to current affairs. But at the same time, I think they're saying that the past of our country and what it stands for won't change (The iron walls protect the souls, of my old boots) no matter what current leaders do. That's a very difficult verse.

Awesome song, great band.

It seems to me to be about the Currant affairs of the states, how the current political party attempts to use pride and the past to provoke patriotism in the people today. And song also relaizes the blind danger in this. This is my guess, but I am not from the states so I could be way off. I like this song though, it starts out with a James Bond feel to it.

I like this song, because the path between 2:00-2:55 is more Stone Temple Pilots tunes than Guns n Roses. And that means the Scott Weiland work it´s ascending. I can´t understand the lyrical way.

Awesome song. VR is leading the fight to bring back REAL rock n' roll, and Scott sounds very clear on this one.

2:00-2:55 is somewhat STPish, but then again, it's obviously got more to it.

Libertad was at one stage going to be a concept album about 'freedom' so I think this song was written early on.
