Odette

For those unfamiliar with the plot, Swan Lake relates a fairy tale of romance between Prince Siegfried, who has just turned 21, and the beautiful Odette, a princess condemned by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart to embody swan by day and woman by night; only true love can save Odette from permanent swan-dom.

Siegfried is under pressure from his mother to find and marry a mate by the night of his birthday ball. Upon spying a flock of swans over a nearby forest, Siegfried follows only to be confronted by Odette; immediately he falls in love.

By dawn, Von Rothbart comes to reclaim Odette, and she becomes a swan once again. On the night of Siegfried's birthday ball, the sorcerer arrives uninvited with a mystery guest: his daughter, Odile, who bears a striking resemblance to Odette. Fooled by the doppelganger, Siegfried asks for Odile's hand in marriage. Moments later, Siegfried is blindsided by a vision of the real Odette and realizes his grave mistake.

I believe Jenny (his ex wife) is Odile and Matt is yearnig for a another woman or maybe Jen the woman he loved (before the divorce) to come save him. It makes sense to me Hey Midnight Odette the woman appears at night to save him.

"Don't wanna be so wide awake" "make me forget what I've done, what I've become". I just think this is another amazing song on Hospital Music. I dont necessarily know what Matthew was thinking when he wrote this, but all I know is that its a beautiful song, along with the record. I can relate to this song, and thats all I need to know.

As I listen to Hospital Music, the song Odette becomes more and more beautiful to me. I always felt this song was about love, and being in love, with the lines "I look tired, but I, I feel wired. And my body hums like it's coming undone." Could this mean being intimate with someone? Or it can be interpretted as being scared of what is to come next. Lines like "Don't wanna be so wide awake" might suggest anxiety. Nightime brings solice and peace, the stars are a source for relaxation.

Personally, I don't see this as a love song at all. To me this song is about person struggle. In this case maybe more specifically about his battle with bi-polar.

Being exhausted, but your mind is awake and racing: "I look tired, but I'm I feel wired"

"And my body hums like it's coming undone" I have actually felt this. Skin crawling...

The want of being free of constantly being so aware and alert of everything around you..unable to relax. He wants to be less awake so he can forget what's happened to his life.

And the midnight with the stars...makes me think of driving on a highway. Maybe the escape of all his troubles?

Just my personal interpretation of the feel of the song I guess.

I really like what the-inescable us describes. I get it totally and completely. For me there is tranquility that comes with the night. Things are less harsh, calm. When I stuggle with anxiety I am in love with the night as it's my saving grace.

I can relate. I'm frequently mentally exhausted but unable to sleep, with thoughts racing through my head and my body feeling like it wants to do something physical. My body prefers to be awake at night. I find this song very soothing.

I also have bipolar syndrome so I can relate.

This is not a love song, it's not meant to be beautiful.

When you have bipolar you can often feel tired and exhausted in the middle of the day for no reason. And you can also may not be able to get any sleep at night.

In this song he is dealing with his bipolar; he wants odette to make him forget, what I would guess to be his depression or OD.

Very simple. When I am depressed this song is great.
