The Night Starts Here

Stars are notorious for sneaking dual meanings into their songs, most notably through the use of male and female vocalists (most apparent in "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead").

Here it appears that the male is attempting to leave the relationship, with child being quite an apt metaphor for the new situation. The death of the relationship is the birth of new beginnings. The time we had, the task at hand, the love it takes to destroy a man, the ecstasy of being free all allude to his desire to leave.

For the female character however it's almost as though she's saying how the male brought this situation on himself. YOU name YOUR child after YOUR fear and tell them I have brought YOU here" -almost as if she feels blamed for the breakup.

Dropping a coin into a sea is throwing away something valuable which will never return, but also alludes to something like a wishing well. Quite a beautiful reference in my opinion.

The male character wants out, the female wants him back ("forget your fear"), but realizes that it'll never happen. Were we angels after all? I don't know.

this song makes me think of a dream. when you're going to sleep...the night starts here. i don't know if this is fully supported in the lyrics, but that is definitely the feel i get.

My thoughts conjure up to believe that this song represents a couple going through a miscarriage.

The night starts here can refer to two different nights where life would be considered to start. 1) the night they find out they're pregnant 2) the night following a miscarriage

Throwing a coin into the sea and wishing something come back may represent wishing for the pregnancy back.

The time it takes to become a man (conceiving a child)

The time it takes to destroy a man (miscarriage)

The ecstacy of being free (yeah miscarriages suck but you are trying to have a positive attitude of a future)

The black cloud over you and me (although trying to stay positive, the black cloud (miscarriage) lingers there.

The missing stone in the graveyard (there is not a grave for most miscarriages.

It's really pretty but not like the Stars I know.

This sounds very Stars-like to me. Whispery lyrics with a great beat is very Stars.

Well I guess since it's a new album it doesn't sound familiar...oh, I don't know.

Well regardless of how the song sounds, I think the meaning is something along the lines of accidental pregnancy.

You name your child After your fear And tell them, "I have brought you here."

The pleasure part The after shock The moment that It takes the fall apart

Even the verse: You drop a coin Into the sea And shout out, "Please come back to me!"

Can refer to sperm (coin) swimming along and meeting an egg in the "sea" and wishing it'd come back and had never done that 'cause now there's a baby growin'.

What the hell? How is this not Stars?

Stars is notorious for their instrumentals, for their soft spoken lyrics, that reinforce a message throughout the entire song, the fact that they can captivate you with an entire song.

This song is a beautiful way to start an album honestly.

To go off what Silent-t said, I think it might be. Especially with the album title, and the opening lines that repeat "the night is here / forget your name / forget your fears" kind of allude to this sense of urgency. A "the time is now or never". They might have had sex the night before he left for the war; but I don't think the worry is so much in never seeing her lover again--

but with bringing a child in the middle of the war.

"I have brought you here."
