yesterday, any way you made it was just fine--
saw you turn your days into night-times.
didn't you know you can't make it without ever even trying?
and something's on your mind, isn't it?
let these times show you that you're breaking up your mind,
leaving all your dreams too far behind.
didn't you see you can't make it without ever even trying?
and something's on your mind, isn't it?
maybe another day you'll want to feel another way; you can't stop crying
you haven't got a thing to say;
you're feeling you want to run away;
there's no use trying anyway.
i've seen the writing on the wall:
who cannot maintain will always fall.
didn't you know you can't make it without ever even trying???
and something's on your mind, isn't it?

    How come no one has commented on THIS SONG??? Sweet Jesus!

    When I listen to this song I can't help but see Karen Dalton sitting beside a friend, a young man maybe while he's laying down on a bed with his back to her - just somber. All the while she's reaching out to him through this song.

    I just recently put this on a mix to a friend who literally walks with the weight of the world on his shoulders. I hope he likes this song in particular.

    It's magic and beautiful.

    Whilst I love everyone's interpretations of what the 'something' on the person's mind is, I think Karen is trying to address the fact that you can think. For those who feel disassociated, she reminds us you think therefore you are, 'SOMETHING is on your mind'. Even if our thoughts don't lead to success 'leaving all your dreams too far behind' or we are just living day-to-day 'saw your days turn into night times', she grounds us in the presence and the immanence of our current thoughts and perceptions. No matter how hard things are, 'any way you made it was just fine'. She calls us to be present and grateful for the gift of our existence.

    Wow Great voice - heard this at the end of credits on a movie - margots wedding or something - watchable movie but music was better - read that she died a druggie on the street in 1993 -never got any regognition even though bob dylan was a fan.

    This is one of those song that you just find by accident and become one of your all-time favorites. It has everything going for it: The unique voice, lovely melody and instrumentals, great lyrics... it's a masterpiece.

    This song makes me feel like someone's there for me when I'm sad or depressed about something. I wish more artists today would create more songs like this one.

    Just heard the Wall cover of this song. Beautiful and haunting!

    I think we all know exactly what's on this person's mind. There is always another choice...sometimes it's near impossible to find the will to keep on trying, but what else can you do? You must.

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Amazing
