Love on the Rocks Lyrics

We met on a rainy evening in the summertime
Don't think I need to tell you more
I needed a raise, I worked so hard for this love of mine
Still I got nothing to show for it

Tongue tied and twisted, go on baby and go to my head

Here's a simplification of everything we’re going though
You plus me is bad news
But you’re a lovely creation and I like to think that I am too
But my friend said I look better without you

Tongue tied and twisted, go on baby and go to my head

Babe, baby believe me
If I stay it ain't gonna be easy
Okay we'll do it your way
But this is the last time
You'll hear the beautiful sound of love coming down
Love on the rocks

You love the chase but hate me for the runaround
We both just tired of the whole thing
You tell me what you want you need you know you have to have
And I just pretend I'm listening

Too tired this time to deal with old suits you wear with your ties that won't bind

Babe, baby believe me
If I stay it ain't gonna be easy
Okay we'll do it your way
But this is the last time
You'll hear the beautiful sound of love coming down
Love on the rocks

Hot as hell cold as ice sip it slow cause it’s so nice
Dulls my senses drives my pain but I do it again
Burns a bit to the touch dangerous if it’s too much
If this bottle could talk
Love on the rocks

Babe, baby believe me
If I stay it ain't gonna be easy
Okay we'll do it your way
But this is the last time
You'll hear the beautiful sound of love coming down
Love on the rocks

Not sure why this song doesn't have more comments. I think it's her best on the CD.. fun, upbeat, and addictive to listen to. Basically a song where she is saying a relationship is going to be rocky if they stick it out, hence, "love on the rocks".

Two kids who do the run around is a bad idea, basically.

I'm with Museicalin; this song may very well be the best one on the album.

okay...i get the whole relationship on the rocks thing. but i seriously think that this song is about a rocky alcohol addiction. "Hot as hell cold as ice sip it slow cause it’s so nice Dulls my senses drives my pain but I do it again Burns a bit to the touch dangerous if it’s too much If this bottle could talk Love on the rocks". i mean come on...it makes sense. after i heard this part, i listened to the whole song over again and the alcohol thing makes sense.

anyway, just my 2 cents =)

I doubt it's about alcohol. It's more than likely a metaphor about her addiction to the type of love she's/ was involved in.

Sara Bareilles is known for clever word play. She's simply comparing the rocky relationship (two kids doing the run around, as killstar put it) to a rocky alcohol addicton. The lyrics are great and fun to sing. I agree with shikonaori. Its one of the best songs on the album(next to Gravity)

No. This song is not at all about alcohol addiction. It's a metaphor. C'mon.

"Hot as hell, cold as ice...", to me means that the relationship is always going to one or the other extreme.

"Sip it slow 'cause its so nice, dulls my senses drives my pain but I do it again", it feels good because it impairs her senses, like alcohol, but it also brings her pain; and she can't help but keep running back.

"Burns a bit to the touch, dangerous if it's too much...", means maybe like when you touch something, it...

On the other hand, ksprink1--and not to discount your interpretation because in art it's always valid--alcohol merely seems to be the operative metaphor for the rocky relationship.

Yeah, I don't think that it's specifically about alcohol and I tend to agree with the first comment, but alcohol is a prevelent theme or metaphor. I mean, "love on the rocks" could mean a "rocky" relationship, or a play on "-insert drink name here- on the rocks" (which means with ice, if you didn't know.)

And I agree that this is one of the best on the CD. By faaar. It's lovely.

The song is about a relationship that didn't work out ("I worked so hard for this love of mine / Still I got nothing to show for it"). However they're still a part of each other's lives, and they still care about each other ("You're a lovely creation and I like to think that I am too"). The problem is that they just don't work in a relationship ("You plus me is bad news"). He still has a strong effect on her ("Tongue tied and twisted... go to my head") and they still get together, but it only ends up hurting her. But he's like an addiction and she keeps coming back for more ("Okay we'll do it your way").

I love this part: "You love the chase but hate me for the runaround We both just tired of the whole thing You tell me what you want you need you know you have to have And I just pretend I'm listening"

This is what was wrong with the relationship... he only wants her when he has to "chase" after her, but she's so willing to be his that the chase element is lost. And she doesn't listen to him when he tells her what he needs/wants.

i think its the mix of play on words, the rocky relationship and the alcohol metaphor, which isnt just in the last verse but also in the "tongue tied... go to my head" part how her addiction to this love is like being drunk. also in the "sound of love coming down" because its like love is being poured, but definitely just a metaphor because there's a sense of a two way street where she says that "it won't be easy" and then "we'll do it your way"

Like some of you said it's an economic metaphor. "on the rocks" is usually a term for a type of liquor on ice.
So I think she's trying to simulate love and alcohol. They're both contradicting "hot as hell cold as Ice" when one drinks alcohol even if it's cold it'll feel warm/hot in ur throat and makes it burn. She's trying to say that love is like this. It comes in one way and completely changes in another. And like some of you guys said, she's addicted to alcohol/love. so in the song love is some type of liquor. give me some jackdaniels on the rocks and your giving me love haha

Sorry about the wrong words stupid spell check.... I mean "alcoholic metaphor ". And "incorporate love as an alcoholic drink"
