Expensive Tastes Lyrics
Strings attached
fake eye lashes
brok upon the piggie
bank for petty cash
sensitive sister
blushin don't stare
watch the children squabblin
in the square
tip my hat
low windows
once i saw you naked
there was nothing to show
piano place and out of tempo
of all the girls of in our class
shes the most refined
i like to be there in the morning
when you wake up
maybe bad dreams become easter
we could pack up x2
[im not sure whats being said in this stanza]
i like to show up at your door steps
[?????????????????]
and meet your family couple of them cookin
[????????????????]
i refuse to take that job
just because i'm poor
don't mean i can't be a snob
strawberry hair
fair freckled skin
waiting like a creep outside till the end
shy expression shown on her shoulders
bought this house with money
that your grandfather stole
much too young save the imagination
through an elegant girls reputation
i like to be there in the morning
when you wake up
maybe bad dreams become easter
we can pack up
whoaoooo...whaooooo!...
and when they ask me my occupation
i'm a prayin and working on my patience
i got no good friends
politic party
[??????????????....car keys]
now lets all roll in smoke for trades
drink my waiting coffee
at the penny arcade
rows of shoes
shelves of jewerly
mommas dying her hair in the vanity
daddys watch too tight
try silver spoon for size
harder than a needle
through a camels eye
folks gather around the table find a place
boys that girl don't have expensive tastes
fake eye lashes
brok upon the piggie
bank for petty cash
sensitive sister
blushin don't stare
watch the children squabblin
in the square

I'm pretty sure it's "drink my weight in coffee" rather than "waiting coffee"
Definitely my favorite Cold War Kids song.... It's surprising that it isn't more popular.
This song is hard to understand at some bits and I can't figure out what they are either, but I did notice that it is actually "...in her class" and "Maybe pipe dreams, but come Easter". Trivial, but worthy of note if we are to give this song as much appriciation as it deserves. This is such a great song full of great imagery, I can perfectly see this woman in her own little world and can almost sympathize for her. Cold War Kids certainly made a home run with this song!
i think it's "waiting like a creep outside cotillion. shy expression, shawl on her shoulders" and then "ruin an elegant girls reputation." also trivial, but thought i'd mention it. oh and, "mass lets out, rolling smokes for trades"
i love this song. "i'd like to be there in the morning when you wake up.. maybe pipe dreams" definitely one of their best songs.. too bad they never play it live anymore.
more additions: after "meet your family, compliment cooking" "drink the beer that your uncle's a'brewing" - possibly?
and after "politic party" "her aunt's taking away my car keys"
such a pretty song...and yes, FULL of imagery... i love the one line: "i refuse to take that job/just because i'm poor don't mean i can't be a snob"
Um. "BROKE APART the piggy bank.."
And, the stanza that no one can make out.. the second line says something about wearing a coat?
"Waitin like a creep outside COTILLION."
Cotillion = debutante, really.
"Shy expression, SHAWL on her shoulders."
Update these lyrics, thanks? :l This is my favourite Cold War Kids song and it annoys me to see the lyrics wrong.
I love his voice when he sings, "Drink my waiting coffee at the penny arcade." :]

that's the cold war kid's myspace, that picture has the right lyrics on it. and you're right StickCore, it is "weight in coffee".
This is how I think it goes, Still a bit fuzzy and makes me wish I could jump into this guys head and see what the lyrics really are. Strings attached Fake eyelashes Broke apart the piggy bank for petty cash Sensitive sister Blush and don’t stare Watch the children squabbling In the square Tip my hat Low windows Once I saw you naked there was nothing to show Piano place and out of tempo Of all the girls in her class she’s the most refined
I’d like to be there in the morning When you wake up Might be pipe dreams But come Easter We could pack up
I’d like to be there in the morning When you wake up Might be pipe dreams But come Easter We could pack up
(Vocalizing in background) I’d like to show up At your doorstep Wearing a winter (Unintelligible) And meet your family, Couple of them are cooking Take the (something) that your uncle (something) is brewing
I refuse to take that job Just because poor don’t mean I can’t be a snob Strawberry hair Fair freckled skin Waiting like a creep outside cotillion Shy expression Shawl on her shoulders Bought this house with money that your grandfather stole Much too young Save imagination Ruin an elegant girl’s reputation
I’d like to be there in the morning When you wake up Might be pipe dreams But come Easter We could pack up
(Vocalizing in background)
Now when they ask me My occupation And they’re preying and working up my patience I’ve got no good friends But it’s a party And someone is taking away the car keys
Mass let’s out, rolling smokes for trades Drink my weight in coffee at the penny arcade Rows of shoes Shows of Jewel breeds Mama’s dying her hair in the vanity Daddy’s much too tight Tries silver spoon for size Hotter than a needle through a camel’s eye Folks gather round The table from their place “Boy if that girl don’t have expensive tastes”
Some are a bit different, some are the same.
the end you have is wrong, it goes:
Shelves of jewelry Mama’s dying her hair in the vanity Daddy’s watch too tight, Try silver spoon for size Harder than a needle through a camel’s eye Folks gather round The table, find their place
