Back in the days when I was young,im not a kid anymore
but some days I sit wish I was a kid again (x2)
Back in the days......

When I was just a little niggero
I looked up to my bigger bro
Begged if I could kick it so
When he went out with girls I could go taggin along
Naggin,if she had a sis, maybe could mack a baby hood rat
Y'all remember way back then
When it was 1985
All the way live
I think I was about ten
One of those happy little niggas
singin the blues
That be always tryin 2 bag
with the shag
and karate shit
Sayin yo mama black
His momma this
His momma that
Then he'd get mad and wanna scrap
We'd stay mad, about ten minutes spin it
like back on the bike
to play hide and go get it
with the younger hoes
by the bungalos
Then switch to playing ding-dong-ditch
When that gets old
and to cold to hack it
Threw on a baller jacket
You could tell the ballers
cause they fell wearin gazelles
If they relly had money raised we'd sport NeeKay's (Nike's)
And on the girls had they turkish link
If it broke they made earings to it,
like they mean to do it
But sometimes I still sit and reminisce
Then think about the years I was raised,
back in the days

Back in the days when I was young,im not a kid anymore
but some days I sit wish I was a kid again (x4)

And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
What?
(Backin the days)
When?
(back in the days)

Im still back in the days
But now the year is 87-88
Thats when my crew and I
Were in Junior high
in 7th grade
I hated school
(wishin i had grown up)
No doubt I couldnt wait to get out
(and be a grown up)
But let me finish this
reminiscin and tellin
Bout when girls was spellin
tight cordorouys
like for the boys
Basket weaves
Nike cortez and footsie socks
And eatin pickles with tootsie pops
And it dont stop
I'm glad
cause when JJ fad
Did super sonic
It was kind of like a sport
to where biker shorts
Or to where jeans
and it seemed like the masses of hoochies
Had poison air brushed on they asses
Dudes had on nike suits
And the Puma's with the fat laces
Cause it was either that or K-Swiss
I miss those days
and so I pout like a grown jerk
Wishin all I had to do now was finish homework
Its true
you dont realize really what you got
til its gone and im not gonna sing another sad song
but sometimes I do sit and reminisce
then think about the years I was raised
Back in the day

Back in the days when I was young,im not a kid anymore
but some days I sit wish I was a kid again (x4)

And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
What?
(Backin the days)
When?
(back in the days) (x2)

Well its the niggero
I figure that now im all grown up
Because im 18 years old
And guess you could say im holdin down
a steady job,and crew steady mob
and you steady bobbin your head
And im paid
so I got it made
but didnt always have clout
Used to live in south central LA
Thats where I stayed and figured a way out
I gave it all I had
so for what its worth
I went from rags to riches
wich is a drag
but now im first
So(?....on our way up)
Yeap,we said that we was gonna make it since a kid
and we finally did
But sometimes I still sit and reminisce then
think about the years I was raised
back in the day

Back in the days when I was young,im not a kid anymore
but some days I sit wish I was a kid again (x4)

And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
And everybody say
(I remember way back when)
What?
(Backin the days)
When?
(back in the days)

Classic love story true to his western tx roots. One of my favorites as a story, but I think there are alot of songs that are amazing not even listed on this site. I guess I should figure out how to add them, because I have about 8 REK cd's.

Spirit Within
Bertoldi Brothers
Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Ministry
Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
