The Hill Lyrics

Walking up the hill tonight and you have closed your eyes.
I wish I didn't have to make all those mistakes and be wise.
Please try to be patient and know that I'm still learning.
I'm sorry that you have to see the strength inside me burning.

Where are you, my angel, now? Don't you see me crying?
And I know that you can't do it all, but you can't say I'm not trying.
I'm on my knees in front of him, but he doesn't seem to see me.
With all his troubles on his mind he's looking right through me.
And I'm letting myself down by satisfying you,
And I wish that you could see I have my troubles, too.

Looking at you sleeping, I'm with the man I know.
And I'm sitting here weeping while the hours pass so slow.
And I know that in the morning I have to let you go.
And you'll be just a man once I used to know,
before these past few days; someone I don't recognize.
This isn't all my fault. When will you realize?

Looking at you leaving, I'm looking for a sign.

These are the right lyrics:

Walking up the hill tonight and you have closed your eyes. I wish I didn't have to make all those mistakes and be wise. Please try to be patient and know that I'm still learning. I'm sorry that you have to see the strength inside me burning.

You are absolutely correct. Furthermore, the song was written by (and only by) Marketa Irglova—not by Glen Hansard at all.

I fixed the lyrics, and submitted a comment about the authorship of the song.

This is my favorite song from "Once". It's absolutly beautiful and in a way haunting. It's about looking at her relationship and realising her mistakes. It's the last hours of there relationship. She knows that when he wakes, it's over. If anybody has ever experienced this, this song will break your heart. It's like he's a ghost now and she's singing to him. Very emotional and powerful song in all it's fragility,

Yes.

I sobbed through the entire scene of her playing (part of) this song when watching the movie.

This song is beautiful, and was probably the most emotional song of the entire film. About how the time they've shared has been great, but they have to let go. So beautiful...

This song is so beautiful. I think it's about a relationship that was once really great, but the guy has distanced himself from her. She still loves him and is trying to make things work but he's just getting further and further away from her until they break up..

it makes me cry every time.

Ah! I was about to start pulling lines out that triggered the most emotions filling up inside me... but realized I would be quoting nearly the whole song back to you. Unfortunately (and fortunately?), I feel every bit of this song... it came at the most bizarre time. It echoed my thoughts with more beauty and passion than I could ever attempt to convey.
I'm still in awe...

I have a question: I've been trying to decipher this piece and so I have read over the lyrics about a million times but I still don't understand what the significance is of "the hill". Like, what does the hill represent?.. For example the first line, "Walking up the hill tonight".. Can anyone help?

@erin100565 i was thinking the 'bump' in the relationship, maybe when she started realising the end?
