there isn't much to the explanation of this song. It is basically a beautiful piece in which their thoughts are set on the idea of everything ending up for the better. Many people could tell them what they are doing is wrong, however, they know that if it feels so right it can't be that bad.

Steven Sater originally wrote Melchior raping Wendla by the end of this song - ending Act 1 with her screams, but decided with the show in the workshop phase to have them both consent to having sex to show a more loving relationship between them. I think his original idea can still be shown in the broadway show (clips on YouTube) when Wendla resists for so long before giving in.
