The Dark I Know Well Lyrics
There is a part I can't tell
About the dark I know well
You say time for bed now child
Mom just smiles that smile
Just like she never saw me
Just like she never saw me
So I leave wanting just to hide
Knowing deep inside
You are coming to me
You are coming to me
You say all you want is just a kiss goodnight
Then you hold me and you whisper, "Child, the Lord won't mind"
It's just you and me
Child, you're a beauty
God it's good, the lovin'
Ain't it good tonight?
You ain't seen nothing yet
Gonna treat you right
It's just you and me
Child, you're a beauty
I don't scream though I know it's wrong
I just play along
I lie there and breathe
Lie there and breathe
I wanna be strong
I want the world to find out that you're dreaming on me
Me and my beauty
Me and my beauty
You say all you want is just a kiss goodnight
Then you hold me and you whisper, "Child, the Lord won't mind"
It's just you and me
Child, you're a beauty
God it's good, the lovin'
Ain't it good tonight?
You ain't seen nothing yet
Gonna teach you right
It's just you and me
Child, you're a beauty

Both of the lead singers have been physically and sexually abused by their fathers, giving them some common ground. The "Dark" she knows well is the evil in humanity, and it is quite disturbing how she already knows of it, but it just furthers the motif of this piece that adults are often much worse than teenagers. When they start speaking in third person to no one in particular (It's just you and me. Child, you're a beauty) they are referring to how their fathers and other adult figures attempt to sweet talk them to fulfill their own lust.
Ahh this is the song i keep trying to write. thank god some one wrote it for me since i suck at it. i love how its so angry and removed instead of woe is me and sorrowful
No, it's about a girl who gets molested by her father and the other girl by somebody, not necessarily specified. Really intense song... even more so live.
If it wasn't in a musical I would say it's open to interpretation, but it's not, this song tells a story.
Oh God, when I saw this in the theater it gave me shivers. You can hear the pain and anger in their voices, at both the abuse, and how they can't do anything about it.
Martha sings the first stanza. Her father was abusive.
Ilsa sings the second stanza. her father raped her. She ended up going into prostitution.
"So I leave wanting just to hide Knowing deep inside You are coming to me
You say all you want is just a kiss goodnight"
They're pretty self-explanatory especially if you're familiar with the storyline.
I don't remember Ilsa having to be a prostitute
I don't remember Ilsa having to be a prostitute
It's all about sexual pressure; like a should-i-stay-or-should-i-go kind of deal.
