Going Down With This Ship Lyrics

Its staring you, its staring me
Staring words I don't feel you believe
It's giving hope to all of us
Who'd sooner play a rich man's game than fall in love.
You come apart with everything like a bird with wings that has no reason to fly.
And so I watch the waves surround us, leave us shipwrecked on a desert island filled with pirates
This time treasure will not save us

Run away and they will only follow you
Sail away and the waves will come for you

Now this ghost ship it haunts my dreams, abandon hope. I swim for love, baby
I reached the shore, saved by a storm, this shows me what I have become
A diary that speaks of torture, we're your passengers all heartbroken, in black and white
Such a graceful suicide

Run away and they will only follow you,
Sail away and the waves will come for you

The TV cracks as I reach out for you
You've been brainwashed this world's got to you too.
The pretty face on the magazine ain't you.
The waves will come for you

Run away and they will only follow you
Sail away and the waves will come for you
The waves...

Luke Pickett is amazing. His voice is so emotional and full of love, it fits his songs perfectly. You get pulled into the song and his voice and you feel every single word. This song is obviously about a girl and a relationship either falling apart or re uniting.

This song inspires me : ) It is projecting that we must not run away from our troubles because they will come back like waves. This world tells us to stay away from taking big risks but the greatest danger in life is to not risk at all. We must be able to risk to live and going down with this ship is part of the process sometimes...

something is making me believe that this has a hidden message of the showbiz. how it can distroy everything around you.

-run away and they will only follow you as in you can't get away from it. then he uses the great anonym (sorry i cant spell) of that waves and the boat.

the third verse i think wraps it up for me. but tell me if im wrong.

amazing song non-the-less.

luke did such a beautiful job on this song

to me i feel like he's talking about if you lie and avoid confronting things that you have to do but someone or something might be holding you back(whatever that may be) they only get worse and comes back to hit you twice as hard

"Run away and they will only follow you Sail away and the waves will come for you"

like as if to say you can run but the guilt or the problem will always subconsciously be there.

This song is so beautiful. To me I feel like

"Now this ghost ship it haunts my dreams, abandon hope. I swim for love, baby I reached the shore, saved by a storm, this shows me what I have become "

expresses all those ghosts in the past, and the way you try to get past them and reach the point of them being in the past (the shore). the past changes us, and looking back it shows us what we have become now.

he also tells us about how we escape problems and they come back bigger. I like the comment on society in western life.

"You've been brainwashed this world's got to you too. The pretty face on the magazine ain't you. The waves will come for you "

this is a typical comment on how people try to be the perfection they see on magazines, but they can't be. the problems come back, those blank eyes and that perfect life you see on the television isn't real.

okay so this song is about love and a relationship which is 'going down'. Even though he loved her very much he doesnt anymore "words i dont feel and you believe". she has fallen in love with his poetic words although he feels as though their relationship is corrupt and she is not in love with him rather the idea of him. He uses the island as an analogy for their isolation in their relationship, but the 'pirates' represent bad things in the relationship which they cannot escape from anymore, like arguments which they used to be able to make up afterwards but now he just doesnt love her enough. I think the waves represent the inevitable and other people, and perhapps conscience which they cannot run away from. He describes their relationship as a suicide perhaps because he doesn't see the point in it anymore and it is killing them both. I think the last verse is explaining how maybe they have both changed due to the "TV" "brainwash[ing]" them and perhaps this is due to them growing up - it could have been an innocent childhood relationship, but now they've both grown up and he is looking at her and thinking this isn't you. I think they tried to run away from everyone but have discovered that they could not escape from civilisation and their love wasn't strong enough to last on its own. The waves have eventually come for them and the ship is going down.
