Falling Apart Lyrics

Maybe it's because I'm crazy,
Maybe it's because I just can't,
Honestly tell you what I want.
It's never enough to stay still and hold you,
To break loose and run the taste of you,
Wild on my tongue.

Am I no good to you now?
Am I no good to you now?
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh
We're spilling over.
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh
We're falling apart.

Spent my days with doctors,
And my nights with crooks,
And all of them who sell me for a song.
So I'm here.
Safe Dear.
A fiction in your arms.

Am I no good to you now?
Am I no good to you now?
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh
We're spilling over.
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh
We're falling apart.

I'm giving up.
Starting over.
I wanna be,
I wanna hold you.
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh
We're Falling apart.

Cause all I say,
It doesn't matter anyway.
All I say,
It doesn't matter anyway.
I'm giving up,
So call my bluff.
Cause I just need to be reminded who I am.
I'm falling apart.

Whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh
We're spilling over.
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh
We're falling apart.

So get me out
Start me over
For heaven's changed
I should have told you
Whoa-oh, whoa-oh whoa-oh
I'm falling apart.

So wanna be loved?
So wanna be loved?
So come on now
Come on love.

Ever felt like you're better than what you've been showing another person, and you don't want them leaving without seeing what you CAN be?

Seems like that's what this song is about. More precisely, the moment you realize that you might lose something that could mean everything and you start FALLING APART. And the solution to that is letting go; of a past love, your own pride, control... Whatever it is that is keeping you from being the man (or woman) that person should have because they have let go and they do love you, in spite of all your shortcomings and misgivings.

I have listened to this song eight times in the past hour and watched the video 7 times.

To me it seems as if Matthew is asking himself and the girl he is in a relationship with whether after learning about his faults he is still worth something. It isn't exactly a traditional break up or love song... it is more of a song that questions the worth of a person and whether even if one person is screwed up and can't commit because of (in this case) a past relationship does that mean the new relationship will never work out?

In the beginning he says, "maybe I'm crazy" then asks the question, "am I no good to you now?" which is like asking if he is still worth it. "Spend my days with doctors and the nights with crooks and all of them sell me for a song" which makes me think that he is seeing someone for his problems during the day but at night he ends up getting another source of 'help'. One of the last verses he says, "I'm giving up, I'm starting over, I wanna be the one who holds you," which makes me think he has finally convinced himself that she does love him by surrendering and putting his guard down, that he deserves to be happy after.

My Interpretation

thank you for your interpretation! I am having a really difficult time understand what exactly this song is about, especially the video because the video makes no sense! but your answer has made the most sense out of everything I've read.

This song marks a stark turn on the album, in my opinion. The songs seemingly go from just missing a girl to Matt accepting some of the blame (perhaps by not appreciating her enough).

I agree with you - a distinct turn in the album. Have you ever wondered about the title in and of itself? "Some Mad Hope" is essentially an allegory of a delusional love that he holds out can be rekindled.

I have indeed wondered about the title, and I agree with your assessment.. I love everything about this record right down to the name of it.

This is my absolute favorite Matt Nathanson song. I could listen to it 1,000 a day and never ever get sick of it.

There's just one part of the lyrics that I think is wrong. I'm pretty sure that "For heaven's changed" should be "Forever changed".

there are some errors in the lyrics posted. these are from matt's site:

Hi, I just LOVE Falling Apart, I listen to it all the time. I'm a 49 year old mother of 4 teenagers and my 15 year old son and I are having a disagreement as to one of the lyrics in this song. It's sung as back up in the 2nd chorus, and it's not listed in any of the lyrics, and it sounds something like "there so much I can lose" or my son thinks it's "there so much I can give". Does anyone know the lyric so we can settle this disagreement? Thanks.

i hear "there's so much i can give" as well.

yeah it's there's so much i can give.
