All We Are

He didn't appreciate the relationship when he had it. It's kind of the theme of the newer album.

He knows now in retrospect what he didn't realize in the moment. He tasted love so sweet, but it was lost on him.

The part about going broke believing simple was hard basically states he lost love by overanalyzing everything when he was in the relationship and making it difficult. He should have just gone with it and enjoyed it.

"It's hard to change the way you lose if you think you never won" goes back to how in the moment, he didn't realize what he had. Maybe it was his first love. But now he definitely knows what he lost and what he had "won" when he had her.

this song is amazing.

I heard Matt say this song is about seeing people as they really are and not just as what role they play in your life.

You forget to witness your triumphs even though you desperatly need to. you don't because you are captivated by a sense of loss. So you linger in your loss. Someone wonderful sits in your lap and you don't notice or realize that that person is great. Any lessons learned class...acknoladge small improvements in yourself and ultimately love your self by living life fully.

Out with the old, in with the new.

By him saying "Bought and sold like property" I think he is saying that love comes and goes all too quickly these days. It just seems to be passed on to one another without the full appreciation like when it was pure. Also when he makes a reference to "looking backward," I think that he is talking about having their pasts come back to the present. So they aren't litterally looking backwards but they are thinking of the past. When he starts to talking about the end, I think that he is talking about how no matter what someone says, when the end come, it's done. Nothing will ever be the same no matter how hard you try. That would lead to the dreams "scattering" and "falling like rain" there is no organizatoin to rain, it just falls and you can't gather it back up. When it falls, it's gone.

I think it's a lot like, no matter what the shit is you go through, its what it is, its you and yours... In the end, it's life. And life is beautful, or at least has the potential to be something really beautiful....

but i'm kind of an optimist so yeah...lol....

Matt Nathanson is so good at putting his deepest, most insightful lyrics in the middle of his songs.

It sounds as though it's regret from a break up but despite that life goes on and he's accepted it. He still sees everyday is beautiful and that's pretty awesome given something so heart breaking and heart felt
