Ugli Lyrics

Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli

Ugli, Ugli, Ugli

Some of the lies darken eyes
Way beyond our chemicals
Something wrong nothing learned
I need to feed a whole other hole
fantasize, clear the eyes
How they can all fit inside
Sacrifice sanctifies all the ugly chemical

All hail to the king
the rest of your life, life, life...
All hail to the king
The edge of your world

Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli

Ugli, Ugli, Ugli

Bury I critisize
Count to nine a human soul
Ritual indispose
Stoke a mana listen to gods
Cannibalize terrorize
Take the ugli chemical

Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli
Jesus wants to be ugli

Ugli, Ugli, Ugli

This is the only song I know the meaning behind. Straight from the mouth of Ogre himself, he said that while the song is not an anti-christianity song, it is about some of the ugly things that Christians do in the name of their faith.

I think this song clearly has some sort of religion vs drugs (MJ to be more exact) thing to it. The first verse in particular (and pretty much the whole song) says that religion fucks your mind up more than drugs do. I think the "All hail the king; the edge of your world" line basically says that you can get more out of marijuana than regilion. Keep in mind, Dave is pro-marijuana. Well, that's my take on it.

As for the chants of "Jesus wants to be ugli", I always thought it meant that Jesus wants others to feel sorry for him.

Seeing the song performed live confirmed my first thoughts as to the meaning of the song, especially the chorus Jesus wants to be ugli. It is a comment about the religous right justifying and supporting the Iraq war. Chemical, as first mentioned refers to chemical weapons but after it more generically means war or war mindset. The album is a comment on society and this general interpretation of Ugli fits with the album. The rest of the interpretation is up to the listener but this track does not seem to be meant as a comment on drugs or Jesus, think of the USA's support of the Iraq war and you will come up with your own pieces to the puzzle.

Im not into the bible or anything but it almost seems as if Ogre is playing on the conception from the scriptures regarding jesus' outward appearance, in simple terms, he was said to appear ugly as no other man would wish to be, alot of the song to me has referances regarding the bastardization of christs teachings and how humble man seems to be within their religious impurity/stupidity, it also seems to speak either on chemical depency, in regards to shamanistic spiritual awakenings, or the obsession that the middle east seems to have with chemical weapons.

I think this song is about how religious groups try to be perfect, and end up screwing up and taking things waaay the wrong way. Like the war going on right now, or the Crusades or the Witch burnings. And I think that it means something like that Jesus would rather be "ugli" than the perfection the groups are to trying to pursue which they think is all good and right when it's far from not.
