The song came a long time before the movie....
It's about loving and wanting someone so much that you'd do anything for them. But because they're so stubborn, and so opinionated, and so inflexible in thought and deed, they won't let you in, and just keep pushing you away all of the time.
So it's about that moment where you realise that you're never, ever going to get the love back that you're giving this person, and you walk away....in defeat.

Yeah, sounds like the guy's given up on helping the girl 'cause she never opens up to him or lets him help her. He really wanted to make things all right for her, but she kept her problems from him and he's just fed up with it.

im not too sure what it means... but i think its something like a guy really wants to help this girl (or i dont know, gender isnt specified) but the girl just wants to hide away from all her problems and not accept any help from anyone.

to me, that first verse is nothing short of brilliant. and glen sings with such passion, it's hard not to get caught up

he's talking about his ex girlfriend who he still loves but has made up her mind to leave him for another guy, and that instead of working through their problems "when the shit falls" she just leaves him "you just run away" really powerful song.
I think you guys are right for the most part.
HOWEVER, there's one important distinction to make. The singer never gives up at any point in the song. Rather, he realizes the futility of his action, but he does it anyway. He can't change her nature, but neither can he walk away from the feelings he has for her.
