Wide Open Road Lyrics
Well the drums rolled off in my forehead
and the guns went off in my chest
Remember carrying the baby for you
Crying in the wilderness
I lost track of my friends, I lost my kin
I cut them off as limbs
I drove out over the flatlands
hunting down you and him
The sky was big and empty
My chest filled to explode
I yelled my insides out at the sun
At the wide open road
it's a wide open road, it's a wide open road
How do you think it feels
sleeping by yourself?
when the one you love, the one you love
is with someone else
Then it's a wide open road
It's a wide open road
And now you can go any place
that you ever wanted to go
I wake up in the morning
thinking I'm still by your side
I reach out just to touch you
then I realise
It's a wide open road
It's a wide open road
and the guns went off in my chest
Remember carrying the baby for you
Crying in the wilderness
I cut them off as limbs
I drove out over the flatlands
hunting down you and him
My chest filled to explode
I yelled my insides out at the sun
At the wide open road
sleeping by yourself?
when the one you love, the one you love
is with someone else
It's a wide open road
And now you can go any place
that you ever wanted to go
thinking I'm still by your side
I reach out just to touch you
then I realise
It's a wide open road

This is the poppiest song on the record, and yet it fits in with all these other torch songs. I love how it's just so open ended... it's almost like the protagonist goes through the events in this song every time he awakens.
It's a song about loss, but after the fact and in a context that makes it seem like life has become an alternate universe where the past constantly plays out before the present.
This song should be a standard by now. Why the hell aren't more people covering this?
totally agree, these guys have to be the most underrated oz band ever...very trippy lyrics....love it, spread the word
The Panics did a great cover of this.
The Church covered this one
This band is massively underrated. Wide Open Road is pure heartbreak material. I love to play this song while driving in the desert.
