Cath, she stands with a well-intentioned man
But she can't relax with his hands on the small of her back
And as the flash bulbs burst
She holds a smile
Like someone would hold
A crying child

And soon everybody will ask what became of you
'Cause your heart was dying fast
And you didn't know what to do

Cath, it seems
That you live in someone else's dream
In a hand-me-down wedding dress
Where the things that could have been are oppressed
You said your vows
And you closed the door
On so many men
Who would have loved you more

And soon everybody will ask what became of you
And your heart was dying fast
And you didn't know what to do

The whispers that it won't last roll up and down the pews
But if their hearts were dying that fast
They'd have done the same as you
And I'd have done the same as you

I agree with the comments about this song being about a women in an abusive relationship. I should know, I just came out of one about 2 weeks ago! He was also so well-intentioned, but because of the abuse he suffered 40 some years ago, he 's never been able to maintain a healthy relationship. I had thought at first it was because he was so nice, that women took advantage of him. Boy, I couldn't have been further from the truth. I completely lost my friends, my family, and my own identity. I also have yelled at the movies and tv shows that portray these "helpless" women in abusive relationships. I consider myself very self-confident - I own my own home, I have 4 pets, a very successful career, and a healthy support system of several close friends. How could this has happened? Like the song says, the abusers are so well-intentioned. Everytime I got angry, he manipultated me to feel sorry for him. Once it was over, my friends all came forth, telling me they wanted to say something about what I was doing, but were afraid that I would think they were crazy. And, at the time, I probably would have! But they all said the same thing - we were wondering what became of you....

This song definitely resonates with anyone who has been in abusive relationship. A word of encouragement - I'm 40, single, and happier than I've ever been in my life. DON'T SETTLE!
