Q&A
the ongoing horrible Lyrics
migration to a town where
tree swallows houses
migration to a town where
tree, swallows, houses
like a mime troupe ( stowin' (?) ),
we're all aging doubles.
we sing,
we danced,
shoes on shoes
to the sound of the spinning
machine.
and we slept arm-in-arm,
so soundly ignoring the outside
sounds of the ongoing horrible scene.

First to comment? I love this song. It's whimsical and mellow. I could listen to it over and over because Maps & Atlases are Great.

this song IS bad ass, and seriously where are the comments for this.
the guitar techniques of this song are genius.this band is nothing short of incredible
The were amazing when I finally seen them after a few of my friends said nothing but good things about them. They played with Portugal. The Man (which by the way is another incredible band).
AMAZING BAND..
One of your lines is wrong... It's not a mime troupe stowin'. Dave actually sings "Like a match you've started, we're all aging double"...if someone would like to correct that....
Just a few thoughts about the lyrics....
I think the song is principally about change for the good, and how it's such a source of comfort, that no matter what's happening out there in the "big bad world", what you have is what keeps you safe, and keeps you content. Hence, the "we slept arm-in-arm, so soundly ignoring the outside sounds...."
The spinning machine I think refers to an old-school gramophone, and perhaps the shoes on shoes dancing is alluding to some romanticism being involved in the change I mentioned earlier, which goes with the notion of sleeping arm-in-arm with someone.
The match line might be about how once life's started, the only path left for it is to end, and so we shouldn't dwell on things and miss out on opportunities, which is another reason why I think the song's about positive changes in your life.
Two cents, if you don't mind....
this nigga ^ im pretttttty sure that its not wrong. because these lyrics are on the band's website.

yeah on the band's website it says 'mime troupe stowing'
yeah on the band's website it says 'mime troupe stowing'
The dancing "shoes on shoes" part probably refers to two people growing and learning how to dance to the sound of an old vinyl player... while the sleeping "arm in arm" refers to these two people just being together while avoiding the horrible-ness of the world
