Two Lyrics

If you take me back
Back to your place
I'll try not to bother you
I promise

'Cause it's cold in here
And I wish it was hot
The sink's broke
It's leaking from the faucet

And I'm fractured
From the fall
And I wanna go home
Now it takes two
And it used to take one
It takes two
And it used to take only one

Well, my money's no good
When I'm up to no good
No good ever comes from it honest
I got a really good heart
I just can't catch a break
If I could, I'd treat you like you wanted me to
I promise

But I'm fractured
From the fall
Ooo, and I wanna go home
I'm fractured
From the fall
And I wanna go home

It takes two
And it used to take one
It takes two
And it used to take one
It takes two
And it used to take one
It takes two and it used to take only one

I was once in love with someone, and I'd always ask him, "If I'm good and if I'm quiet and I let you sleep, can I stay the night with you?" He'd playfully give me a hard time because I would keep him up all night... I was never able to contain my excitement in laying next to him. So, if he "took me back to his place," I'd always "try not to bother him." So adorable, eh?

In this song, I thought at first that going "home" meant going away from his loved one, but then I came to the realization that although he is expressing heartache, perhaps he wants to return to the comfort of the past when things were secure and unbroken.

When you break from a fall, you often yearn to be rebuilt by the very reason that you broke in the first place, that's just how we humans operate, it seems.

And in requesting this, the man learns that what he thought he could accomplish alone, he now needs the help of another. It's a beautiful revelation when one can realize in the midst of a fractured relationship that the strength of two people together is more profound than that of only one. Many people become bitter in the wake of loss, but the strong persevere and never lose the vision of Two versus One.

So this guy is admitting that he's a bit bruised, His sink is broken, his heart is broken, and he's admitting the strength in numbers, and he seems to be reaching out for a second chance. So vulnerable and sweet.

Am I close at all???

A lot of great ideas thrown around, I really enjoyed reading them. When I first heard this song, the romantic side to me thought it was a love song. After a lot of thought, I've changed my mind though... I think he provides dual meanings, one about love, one about the realization for the need to be sober. Almost a love song written toward drugs. There's a few corrections to the lyrics (already showed right above me)

"Cause it's cold in here, and I wish it was hot." then "Well, my money's no good when I'm up to no good. No good ever comes from it, honest."

The second one is pretty vital to the analysis of the song, honestly. Some background... Easy Tiger is right during Ryan's struggle overcoming his drug addiction. I mean, the cover itself has him sitting there looking at his watch which reads 4:20. He's smoking a cigarette, which kind of shows his anxiety trying to stay away from drugs.

"If you take me back, back to your place... The sink's broke it's leaking from a faucet." The speaker is somewhere he/she (I'll use he for the rest) doesn't want to be. Everything's broken, cold, etc.. You can imagine that someone who has been a drug addict for the past few years hasn't taken much care of their sink, maybe hasn't paid their heating bill... They want to be somewhere else, anywhere else. Literally, and metaphorically. He's reaching out for help.

"Fractured... from the fall, and I wanna go home." Drugs have fractured the life of the speaker. He's crippled, and needs to get back "home," to a place of comfort and normality. Longs to be back to how he once was.

"It takes two when it used to take one." You know your drug addictions getting bad when you need two instead of one...

"My money's no good, when I'm up to no good. No good ever comes from it, honest." Self explanatory. I think this quote is one of the strongest supports for the argument. Speaker is saying the money is no good when you only use it from drugs. If you only use money from drugs, no good ever comes from money, honestly.

"I've gotta really good heart, I just can't catch a break... If I could I'd treat you like you wanted me to, I promise." Perhaps this is the speakers way of showing us why he needs to stop this addiction. He has lost the one he loves due to it. He's got a good heart, and if he could get sober he'd be everything she wanted. (If you guys know, one of the reasons Adams wanted to get sober is because he lost a lover because of it. And guess who? His new wife, if I'm not mistaken!)

One of the beauty to Ryan's music is that he writes it with so many different levels that multiple interpretations are possible. Beautiful song.

no you got man, its about shooting tar. In the song writers world money some times is a metaphor for heroine. Look no further then gram parsons, "I I had his money," ,and then whiskeytowns, hometown. When the money gets tied.

The song is about how Ryan was in love with someone, but somehow he messed it up, and would do anything to have back what he used to have

He wants to go back to her place, just to be in her presence. He doesnt even need what he had right away, he'll build up to it, which is why he says he wont bother her.

He was independant at one point, but he's not anymore, because the beloved one is his other half. That's the chorus

The rest of the song is him promising her he'd never hurt her again if he had that second chance. He's really in love with her, and would do anything for another chance to show her what she means to him.

chea.

I'm fractured, from the fall and I wanna go home

that just breaks my heart every time

ms_heth, I think you hit the nail on the head.
This is exactly the way I interpret the song.

Shows the pain and sorrow involved in knowing you have hurt your loved one. . . and the hope you have that they will take you back in.

I don't believe Adams wants everything how it was, just for his love to comfort him again. Only many times those who have been hurt can be very reluctant to give back.

A man that destroyed a relationship due to drug use and possibly infidelity. He now realizes that he hurt the only thing that kept him grounded, his love. He yearns for another chance to prove his love because he feels that he somehow has the key to make it work, realizing "it takes to two, when it used to take only one". Without her, life cannot continue because she was and is the missing puzzle piece in his life.

The line 'I've got a real good heart. I just can't catch a break." Hits me in the chest everytime.

if i could, i would treat you like you wanted me to, [[[i promise.]]]

it's not HONEST so change it. i have this as my myspace song & i love it. i'm not entirely sure what it's about. but whatevs, it's another amazing song by ryan. :]

According to a Rolling Stone Magazine interview, Ryan said this is about his life being in shambles when struggling with addiction.

"Two" refers to his tranqilizer/opiate addiction where he now has to take two each time instead of just one... his dependence is getting worse.

It sounds like he's going through a rough time and realizes he needs help. It used to take one, he was independent, but now he needs someone in his life. But because he's been hurt so much and is down on his luck, he realizes he's not the best bet for someone to be with. But he needs to anyway.

I think this song is about him overcoming his addictions and learning to be a human being again...check this article out, it may shed some light:
