I prefer Pictures to this song personally. The song appears to be about extra terrestrial activity and noone listening to the 'believers' claims. Anyway I wanted to comment cause the filmclip to this song was shot at a motel in my street (about 30m away) and you can even see my car in the background!
It's not about believers, it's about being lonley. The person saw a UFO, but nobody is close enough to him to believe him.

'very far from home' - on another planet, in effect, drugged out to excess.
no one believes she is hallucinating, even visualising fictitious objects in her own imagination,
bright lights etc etc refer to being out in some club.

As to any ref to the song.. IF it is about being under the influence, I would think Its about being on A BAD Trip. Not on some plateau.
to me this song is about a person with a mental problem. No one understands them or trys to understand them. Its about being trapped in your own mind, with no means of escape. When they say "Whats it going to take to be back home tonight" it could mean the just want to be sane again or that they are in a physciatric hospital that they want to leave.
