Secret Lyrics
You were from the North, I was from the South
We were from opposite places, different towns
But I knew it was good and you knew it was too
So we moved together like a ball and chain
Minds becoming two halves of the same
It was real, but in shadows it grew
Cos you've got a secret don't ya babe?
I would've shouted loud and broken through
I would've given it all to belong to you
But there were different plans, different rules
You said "where I'm from there is a lock and key
If you'd be so kind as to follow me
I will show you the way to the rest of my sins"
Cos you've got a secret don't ya babe?
Yeah you, you got a secret don't ya babe?
And I should know
Yeah I should know
So this room was damp where your sins laid
There was that smell in the air of an old place
That hadn't seen much daylight in years
And you threw me down, said, "If ya don't mind
I'm gonna leave you here until night time
Then we can do what we want my baby out of the spotlight."
Cos you've got a secret don't ya babe?
Yeah you, you got a secret don't ya babe?
And I should know
Yeah I should know
For I'm your secret aren't I babe?
Yeah I'm your secret aren't I babe?
Aren't I babe?
We were from opposite places, different towns
But I knew it was good and you knew it was too
So we moved together like a ball and chain
Minds becoming two halves of the same
It was real, but in shadows it grew
I would've given it all to belong to you

ok, this song was definitely written about a relationship she had with a woman who wasn't comfortable being open about it. she said so in an interview. and as somebody who has dated somebody in the closet, i can tell you that is exactly what i got from the song.
regardless, i think the song should mean whatever it means to you, which is another thing she said in her interview.
and to whoever freaked out about people thinking everything in her music has to do with "homosexuality", sometimes it does. it's obviously a major part of her life, and a part that she is comfortable with.
Missy said this song was written about a girl she was in love with but couldn't talk publicly about it
here's the interview.. http://www.afterellen.com/people/2008/4/missyhiggins
i think it's definitly about a gay relationship
not just coz of the "secret" bit.
the bit that says "I would’ve given it all that belonged to you but there were different plans and different rules"
"I’ll show you the way to the rest of my sins"
"im your secret arent i babe"
I love this song. Missy Higgins is easily becoming one of my favorite artists...
yeah, as hellolove7 confirmed, i have read before that missy higgins wrote this for a former girlfriend who wanted to keep quiet their same-sex relationship and her own attraction to females- "i'm your secret, aren't i babe". i have heard people call missy higgins a lesbain before, but she is self-identified as a bisexual.
I think this is about being gay. Just read the lyrics and it's easy to see that she's talking about a girlfriend and how she is her secret etc. The more I listen to this song the clearer the meaning seems.
Hmm yeah I have heard people say that, but its not that obvious to me. The only part that implys a gay relationship is the chorous and about it being a secret...
but it could easily be about a straight relationship too. it doesnt say anywhere in the song that its about a gay relationship
i dont neccesarily dissagree it could be about a gay relationship but however i do think it a pretty ambiguous assumption. i think its just a bout a relationship that for some reason or other is not excepted....it could be 4 a range of reasons: religious belief, peer influence, family restraints, or homosexuality. i dont think its fair 2 name one of these and make it the meaning of the song. it will mean a different thing to each listener. i dont think there is a direct meaning for the listener to take even if there was a direct meaning for Missy.
Happy listening =D
why does EVERYONE think that EVERYTHING that missy higgins creates is got something to do with homosexuality?! that dosent define her music!
