The Wrong Girl

This is my favorite song of hers. My interpretation:

They used to be together, but now they are just friends. She still loves him and is trying, unsuccessfully, to get his attentions again. - "You never miss a thing, but you miss me there.". She's not willing to give up on the relationship just yet. She tries to cry, but can't. (The flood gates open...etc.) She feels doubt about trying to get with him again, but her heart tells her to hold her ground and keep at it. "They keep saying this is part of the ride, but I'm not getting stronger." - her friends are trying to tell her, it'll be ok and this is what happens in relationships. So, now she sits at home alone, in angst over the whole thing - hence, the knot in her side. The part about pulling out the chair, I think, refers to her struggling with the idea of doing something drastic to get his attention. She's basically torn about whether the relationship is really over or not. The light and bullet line, I think, is about trying to prove she is not really wounded - she's playing tough on the outside while she's tormented on the inside.

..... hmmm.... am I reading too much into it?

i love this song, too - LOVE her use of lyrics.

i hear this and i think it's about an unfaithful relationship. from what i gather from the lyrics, she's some married guy's fling on the side. "the floodgates open but nothing comes out" like he's pouring out his 'feelings' for her, even though he's married to someone else. nothing real becomes of the words he says. "I'm feeling no relief in my head, just doubt". she's not sure she's buying it anymore.

"but my heart keeps telling me, hold your ground - you'll never learn a thing if you bail out now" she's staying put - for the meantime.

"and I'm lonely again tonight - I can feel it like a knot in my side" it's starting to bother her that she has to share him with someone else... she's being shortchanged, and maybe her conscience is bothering her as well - for his wife's sake.

"they keep saying this is part of the ride - but I'm not getting stronger" obviously this kind of relationship is like this, but she's realizing that it's not healthy for her.

"Yet hold me against the light - Can you see any bullet inside? - You wouldn't find one if you magnified - 'cuz you've got the wrong girl" this isn't going to be the end of her. she's stronger than that.

"I've got my fingers around the back of your chair You'd never miss a thing But you'd miss me there And I just keep thinkin' 'Am I prepared to pull it out from under your trusting stare?'"

she has the power to end the relationship, reveal everything to his wife and 'pull the chair out from under him' - but she's not convinced that she wants to do that... but it's certainly crossed her mind.

"And the house is as quiet as a hollow head - and I'm walking around bumping into things you've said" while he's gone away, she's trying to convince herself one way or the other whether he's really in this for her, or whether he'll leave her for his wife - and one thought contradicts the next. but the reality is, he's not with her right now, is he?

"this has not been as easy as I thought it would - I'd be cooling down the fire if I thought I could" she knew the relationship she was getting into, but didn't know it would affect her so much. but she really does like him - and he's good at putting her on. she's kind of stuck where she is because of her emotions.

she repeats the opening words at the end - as if this cycle of thoughts is going on again and again and again.

-- i can't relate personally to the experience, but the first time i heard it, it's what i thought she was singing about. other songs on the album allude to this kind of situation as well...

no comments ? i love this one ! it was great when she sung it on triple j. and yeah anyway, i love the lyrics. it's like feeling alone after someone has let you down, and you don't know how to carry on because it doesn't seem to be getting better, and you wonder what the point is in carrying on. i love missy. she's got such a great voice and her songs are so personal, it's great when you hear songs that you know have had a lot of heart and soul put into them. =]

Fantastic song. And yes I agree, her performance on triple j was something special!

come on guys. this song is the best one lyrically for missy, keep those comments coming... btw its sooo my fav in the album.. i dont get enough of it, esp with the interpretation// too much to relate to.

who likes to respond to the lyrics? I'm still trying to find out what the bullet-part reall means; does it refer to the know in the side? So basically saying she actually feels like there's a bullet inside her, except it obviously isn't real so 'even if you maginified' you wouldn't find it. Does 'you got the wrong girl' mean that they're looking for a girl who does have a bullet inside her?

I'm Dutch so maybe it has to do with my language

btw best song ever. I just broke up with my boyfriend and not calling him is the hardest thing right now, so the line 'my heart keeps telling me 'hold your ground, you'll never learn a thing if you bail out now'.' is all I keep telling myself

Cestirene, I think the line you mentioned:

is meant to contradict the line before, which leads the reader to believe that, like mel-luvs-tle said, missy feels no reason to keep carrying on because she is so disappointed and jaded. This line, to me, says that although she feels that way now, anyone that really knew her would see that she is going to bounce back and get over it eventually. Bullet wounds are permanent, at least to some degree. I think she's saying that if you took the time to get to know her or understand her situation ("hold her against the light"), you would see that as agonizing as her disappointment is, she's not the kind of girl to let it change her for good.
