Rock My Boat Lyrics
I was feeling pretty good
Thought I finally understood
How to be free, free, free, free
Like the birds, like the bees
Like the wind in the trees
So I went out on a limb
Thinking maybe we could swim
Into the river of light
Into the ocean of pain
Where angels get their wings
Where babies get their names
I wonder if you were aware
How much
You rock my boat
I wonder if you were aware
How much
You rock my boat
I wonder if you were aware
How much
You rock my boat
You rock my boat
Thought I finally understood
How to be free, free, free, free
Like the birds, like the bees
Like the wind in the trees
So I went out on a limb
Thinking maybe we could swim
Into the river of light
Into the ocean of pain
Where angels get their wings
Where babies get their names
I wonder if you were aware
How much
You rock my boat
I wonder if you were aware
How much
You rock my boat
I wonder if you were aware
How much
You rock my boat
You rock my boat

this song is really pretty. :) i like hearing her with dntel.
yeah she has a really soothing voice, sounds good. love the beginning of the song. pretty sure that it's hinting that she doesn't feel free
i think it's saying she was feeling free, uninhibited. then she met someone, and she wanted to give them a try. and she's saying 'you really mean a lot to me'.
Someone may think I'm stupid or get angry, but when I first heard this song I thought it was Alexis Taylor from Hot Chip singing. I don't know why, but to me their voices seem similar. Other than that though, I really like this song. I agree with newyearsproject because I always thought it was about a person who was "free" and enjoying it, but then met someone and decided to take a shot or go out "on a limb." However, things didn't work out and she is asking the other person if they knew how much they affected her by the whole rocking the boat metaphor.
Couldn't it be in the sense of "I thought I got rid of you, why don't you just get out of my life once for all?? you're annoy"...I say this because one of my ex- that hates me of all his heart- displayed it to me once. It couldn't be in another sense just irony.
You really have to have had a deep relationship to relate to this song the way it was written I think... Definitely meant a lot more to me after that.
To me, this song is about finding love and forgetting the wold and the hardships its ever put you through. It's symbolized to me when she says the birds and the bees as well. Letting the relationship set you free like the birds and bees. A natural thing unaltered by your surroundings like the wind and trees. Then its about taking a step further into the relationship going through the light and dark places of relationships. Where angels get their wings and babies get their names. It finishes asking if her partner is aware how much he means to her and how much he's affected her. I can relate to this song like nothing I've ever felt before.

god. god.
it's one of those songs that can be taken to mean various things depending upon the recipient's experiences.
seems to me, however, that it regards an individual who found herself, found her peace and her strength, in a certain someone. seems they're no more, though, due to the "i wonder if you WERE aware." more sad than inspirational, but it's sort of that resigned, accepting sadness that's like "oh, well. shit happens. i wish you the best regardless."
here's the essence:
i really gave myself to you. you did a lot for me. you're still in my mind, evoking everything i can't control. i wonder if you ever knew.

As morbid as this sounds, I think this song might be about suicide. The narrator "finally understands" "how to be free," free of the life that she hates. The river of light and the ocean of pain, where angels get their wings and babies get their names is heaven, where our souls started off and where we should be going when we die. The person who rocks her boat is someone she loves that's keeping her from doing it.
I am also going for the romantic side to the song. Where a relationship meant so much to them that they decided to get hitched and just wants to try and describe the feelings they are experiencing to their other half. Ocean of pain represents the heartache and turmoil you would experience with that person but you decide to go with with it as the person means enough to you to go through it
