The Rain Tree Lyrics
And there was a place
My soul, my grace
On down by the river
And there was a tree
Not far from here
As big as an ocean
We live so free
So glad to see
Our days getting longer
But leaves turn to snow
A house a home
And lives of our own
So time passes on
Where have you gone?
Away from our river
And there in the field
That old rain tree
Is waiting so still
My soul, my grace
On down by the river
And there was a tree
Not far from here
As big as an ocean
So glad to see
Our days getting longer
But leaves turn to snow
A house a home
And lives of our own
Where have you gone?
Away from our river
And there in the field
That old rain tree
Is waiting so still

The rhythms in the song and the patterns of notes make me think of rain. I think "rain tree" is a way of describing a rain cloud. If you've seen a dark cloud stacked tall it can look like a tree. "as big as an ocean".
I get the feeling that he's looking at it near his home. The song is about the passing of time. Children grow up and leave. The rain ends playing outside, the snow ends the summer, and age ends childhood. And yet, the song isn't really sad. It feels more like acceptance and contemplation.
