Future Pt. 1 Lyrics
Late summer sky, two colors deep, three wide and a third all by
And set to try to take away the shadows from your eyes
You shift and sigh, do we live fully grown when we learn to cry?
This is why I never hold a grudge against you, love
But hey, this is the future
And we don't grow up like that
Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails
And we scratch to the bottle when we need
Hey, this is the future
And we don't grow up like that
Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails
And we scratch to the bottle when we need
One body bends, one body twists and breaks and the lifetime is
We rush to amend the situation but it happens all the time
I could pretend to think fondly of half the summer that I spent
In the wilderness, playing soccer and kissing girls
But hey, this is the future
And we don't grow up like that
Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails
And we scratch to the bottle when we need
Hey, this is the future
And we don't grow up like that
Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails
And we scratch to the bottle when we need
And we learn to be ashamed of each other
And we learn to be ashamed of ourselves
One busy street, one flock of birds that scatters beneath my feet
All these simple things they stick to me like truth, like ice, like fire
And set to try to take away the shadows from your eyes
You shift and sigh, do we live fully grown when we learn to cry?
This is why I never hold a grudge against you, love
And we don't grow up like that
Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails
And we scratch to the bottle when we need
Hey, this is the future
And we don't grow up like that
Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails
And we scratch to the bottle when we need
We rush to amend the situation but it happens all the time
I could pretend to think fondly of half the summer that I spent
In the wilderness, playing soccer and kissing girls
And we don't grow up like that
Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails
And we scratch to the bottle when we need
Hey, this is the future
And we don't grow up like that
Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails
And we scratch to the bottle when we need
And we learn to be ashamed of ourselves
All these simple things they stick to me like truth, like ice, like fire

why has no one commented this song. its gooood lol
i think this song is about learning to grow up and how to deal with losing your naivite and innocence.
"Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails"
when you grow older you learn how to fight for yourself and not be so vulnerable.
"One body bends, one body twists and breaks and the lifetime is We rush to amend the situation but it happens all the time I could pretend to think fondly of half the summer that I spent In the wilderness, playing soccer and kissing girls"
I think thats talking about hte people in life who, when faced with difficulties, can't make it through, and "break." people always try to help or fix what they did wrong but they have to admit that it is a fact of life that people get hurt and sometimes theres nothing you can do about it. he says he could just block out all the bad stuff about growing up and just think about his carefree days as a kid, but he doesn't because it's in the past and it isn't real or pleasurable to him anymore.
this is one of the better songs off of their new album
The last words of the song are a reference to Bob Dylan's "Love Minus Zero/No Limit": "My love she speaks like silence, Without ideals or violence, She doesn't have to say she's faithful, Yet she's true, like ice, like fire."
"Hey, this is the future And we don't grow up like that Oh we grow teeth and we grow nails And we scratch to the bottle when we need"
For this part, I always thought the last line went "and we scratch to the bottom of meaning"
It sounds pretty close, and makes more sense to me. But it's probably just another case of misheard lyrics!
