Oh Ana Lyrics

I'll be god today
Hold my head under that bath and breathe away
Slit my wrists and watch that blood evaporate
Being this godly can't be good for Ana's safety, Ana hear me
I'll play god today
Anti up and play that god a poker game
Walk away with all our little god's spare change
Playing this god it can't be good for Ana's safety, Ana hear me

Oh Ana, I'll be with you still
You are the angel that I couldn't kill

I'll fake god today
Hop up on a cloud and watch the world decay
Ana on my shoulders and we'll laugh away
Faking this god it can't be good for Ana's safety,
Ana hear me, Ana baby, I'm not Crazy

Oh Ana, I'll be with you still
You are the angel that I couldn't kill

This is definitely about one of the band member's struggles with anorexia. Anorexics personify their disease as "Ana" when they discuss it online forums. If the title was "Oh Anna" I wouldn't bat an eyelash, but because they only used the one "n" it's pretty evident that they're referring to the disease.

"Playing God today" is referring to the contemplation of suicide (slit my wrists and watch that blood evaporate). But if you get to "play God" and take your own life to get out of the horrible spiral of the disease, that can't be good for "Ana's safety" - this is where they're personifying the disease, asking "Ana hear me". They won't kill themselves for the sake of "Ana", their disease and the only 'person' who understands what they're going through.

Referring to Ana as an angel that they couldn't kill is the clincher - having anorexia provides you with a sense of control, a (maladaptive) coping mechanism for things in your life that are beyond your control. Being unable to kill Ana refers to failing to recover from anorexia (perhaps even after interventions and therapy).

There's a Silverchair song entitled "Ana's Song (Open Fire)" which describes its lead singer's struggle with an eating disorder also.

Song Meaning

@parachutefailing this makes a lot of sense since Ryan Guldemond has had trouble with anorexia and Mike Young has struggled with depression! I like this analysis

@parachutefailing Love the interpretation, I agree but Anorexia is not a disease its a disorder. Get your facts right, please.

@parachutefailing @sad1077680 Mike Young joined the band year and years after oh ana was released. Also Ryan has said it’s not about an eating disorder and it’s just a song with no meaning, and it’s up for interpretation although I do believe it’s was indirectly about anorexia. Like a subconscious thought while writing.

It's a wonderful description of what many anorexic people are going through. The feeling of aloofness, of light-being you get after barely eating for days, setting yourself apart from all the other people that are too weak to resist their stupid urges. The distance between you and all the unimportant things everybody seems to be concerned with. Just don't ever get weak and giving in to this absurd feeling of hunger. The rush of success, everytime you spend another day in control of your life, even if you spend every single second thinking about not eating.

No comments? I actually love this song :D

In my opinion its really about how some people tend to fake God...

There could be more, but thats all I could grab from the song.

Ana = anorexia?

anorexia? wtf?

i think ana is a small child or baby, and the whole song is about a person who obviously doesnt lead the best life, and ana is being exposed to it.

the person is saying that the things they're doing aren't good for "ana's safety" because it's destroying her innocence.

the verses are pretty straightfoward:

suicide = first verse. that's "being God" because they're taking a life. obviously exposing a small child to suicide isn't very good for them.

gambling=second verse. the reference to "god" isn't really God, it's a person good @ gambling.another not so good thing to expose a child to.

the third verse is my absolute favorite. it can be taken so many different ways...

one of which, if you're not into God, is to interpret that they are saying that God pretty much just sits up in heaven all day and watches the world slowly get destroyed, and it's like, entertaining. so by "faking god", the person is pretty much just sitting there and watching everything go to shit and not do anything about it, and ana is on his shoulders being exposed to it too, laughing.

or....

you can put the blame on human beings. "watching the world decay" because humans ARE always trying to play god and sin in the process.

@leahisthugxo clearly you dont get it. It about having anorexia.A band member probably had or has anorexia.

I think this song is about someone trying to play god with their victim, Ana. Now I don't know if Ana's a child, but it seems a lot like the character is trying to play god with Ana's life, but they just can't bring themselves to kill her.

The first verse speaks right out about death, and killing themselves, but they can't seem to do it right, so they gamble with Ana's life, the second verse, and then the third is about the world going to hell...

So maybe this song is more than the characters.

It speaks about torturing self, others, and then the world as a whole, and how the character still isn't crazy compared to the world.

My Interpretation

How I first saw this was the song is about a guy who keeps doing all these stupid things being a dare devil and always getting in trouble for it. Every time he gets a girlfriend they break up soon because of how he acts so idiotic. Then he finds this girl named Ana who as he puts it "can't kill" "chase away". And instead of leaving she helps him when he's in trouble. "Ana's safety" to me sounds like "Ana save me".
