The Race Lyrics
See when I didn't start
That was because of my shoes
Yeah the shoes that I wore
They would have gave me a bruise
As I follow my dreams
Realise all my dreams
See when I didn't start
That was because of my fear
I had another idea
It almost brought me a tear
As I follow my dreams
Realise all my dreams
The sun will rise
Even if you don't happen to be there
The sun will rise
Even if you don't happen to be there
They came from over
The world and further
To see the race that would change the world
And I stopped...
See when i didn't start
that was because of the mood
Is this race worth the pain?
As we run through the rain
As I follow my dreams
Realise all my dreams
See when I didn't start
That was because of my shoes
No I've made that excuse
I need another excuse
As I follow my dreams
Realise all my dreams
The sun will rise
Even if you don't happen to be there
The sun will rise
Even if you don't happen to be there
They came from over
The world and further
To see the race that would change the world
And I stopped...
(if i start running when it doesn't mean nothing, and lose you when this could be something now,
these spikes dig into the tracks, my skull, be calm; so easy now, relax
i can't, you sap my confidence right out your emerald eyes like seas
if i could sail for just a second i'd forfeit easily)
The sun will rise
Even if you don't happen to be there
The sun will rise
Even if you don't happen to be there
Dream slowly
Because these things they take time
And there's not enough time in any race
The minute that I saw your face
I forgot about the race
The minute that I saw your face
I forgot about the race
The minute that I saw your face
I forgot about the race
The minute that I saw your face
I forgot about the race
That was because of my shoes
Yeah the shoes that I wore
They would have gave me a bruise

a good song that sounds great
I think this is about wanting to follow your dreams but always making excuses when people ask you why you haven't got off your arse yet to change things.
Awesome tune!
I agree, I think that he is frightened of change, and is looking for excuses not to, maybe he wants it to be perfect when he does move maybe it's that life goes on without the other person, and if he does go ahead and make this change, moving on, it means having to leave the other person and he wants to avoid making that descision by saying, i need new shoes for the race, etc, etc- maybe it's about having to grow up. At the end, he decides that it isn't worth running the race if it means losing this person. Just an idea.
sorry, accidently deleted some of that, I meant to say: I agree, I think that he is frightened of change, and is looking for excuses not to, maybe he wants it to be perfect when he does move. The bit that goes "the sun will shine, even if you don't happen to be there"- maybe it's that life goes on without the other person, and if he does go ahead and make this change, moving on, it means having to leave the other person and he wants to avoid making that descision by saying, i need new shoes for the race, etc, etc- maybe it's about having to grow up. I'm sure when I was listening on the radio I heard a mixture of "When we have got a storm to face I forget about the race" as well as "the minute that I saw your face...".
I kind of agree with ePilgrimage, except when I heard "the sun will rise, even if you don't happen to be there" was a reference to dying, i.e. the world will carry on being even if you're dead - almost saying nobody'll miss you. I also think 'the race' could be a reference to the human race. When i listened it brought images of like absoloutley everyone racing some giant marathon, but everyone starts (and ends) at different times, and I got the impression the whole song was quite general. Then again, the end bit's the minute that I saw YOUR face, etc. I love the way that the lyrics are well-written, so you can find them simple or puzzling, but not totally obvious and not uber-enigmatical.

oops.
Nice song, very nice song and I think a band to become very big.. but might be overshadowed for being 'another indie band'.
The song, I dont have a clue what it's about..
I thought it was a bit of a love song.. probably mainly 'cause of "the minute that I saw your face, I forgot about the race"
I was thinking 'the race' was career orientated.. and it all doesn't matter to him now he has found love >.<
haha, I guess I'm wrong though :o
