For me, it not only shows love in a romantic sense. It could also be a song about, for example, the love of a mother for her child. I think it basically shows a person protecting/watching over their loved one, whether that loved one is a child, a lover or a friend.

This song reminds me of my daughter. She passed away in June, in my arms. I even sang to her. I heard this song after and it was so fitting.
