I don't know what the friend metaphor is about, but this is the best song off the album hands down for me. To me it's like losing what you hold so dear and losing your way because of it, and trying to get it back.

Agreed, great song. Could be about anything really, but it strikes me as if it's about some form of addiction.

Could also be about a broken relationship, now that I read the lyrics again. "Are you there, dear old friend? I really miss you Cos I cant feel your beats unless my hand`s on my chest" - could be taken literally, he can't feel his heart anymore, since it's "broken"

"Guidance, please! Now dont you shut down again Your guidance ceased and I fell down, I still dont stand" Possibly another metaphor with a physical heart and a "broken heart".

Bah. I'm bad at interpreting songs, and I have trouble expressing myself too, so who knows... I sure don't. ;)

IMO, he his reffering to himself as friend. He has changed drastically and feels that he is no longer the same person. It seems he has lost himself and is trying to get himself back on track.

But like exscape said it could be about anything, interpret it however you want.

For the person below me if you still dont get the dear friend metapor hes refering to his heart, its his friend.

^ You're right. He's talking about his heart, as it used to guide him and provide his conscience, but no longer does, like he died on the inside. One of the few songs that I have come across that actually grew better once I knew what the actual subject matter was.
