Now I Lay Thee Down Lyrics

I want to know
How it feels
When we die
Can you take me under?

Chorus:
Dream over
Grieve no more
And breathe one last time
Now I lay thee down

She watched me leave
Me bleeding
On the floor
As she takes me under

(Chorus)

Godless mimicry
Where lights cemetery
Flashes of the angel’s ivory wings
Images so many broken dreams
Of pain
Terror

Fear
Crippling

Follow the light into the tunnel
Or will it end up in a black hole?
Follow the light into the tunnel,
dead in its end

Was it love?
Was it murder?
Within the eyes of the beholder

What have I done?
I’ve gone and killed the only one I love
How could I do this?
I’m screaming at God
Why do you curse me?
Fuck it, load it, sever the day

(Chorus)

Now I lay thee down,
Underground

The track here is a Romeo and Juliet-style story done in a more realistic setting, telling the tragic tale of a man who wants to die, and his girlfriend helps him commit suicide. While the first half of the song is written from the man’s perspective, the last part shifts to the girlfriend’s as she grapples with the guilt of killing the love of her life, ultimately ending with her taking her own life as well.

About the lyrics, according to Robb Flynn, "Phil Demmel, our guitarist, came in with a riff and said, I don’t really have much, just this… (plays the main riff). We jammed on it, and I was like, Yeah, it’s a fucking cool riff, man. After practice, I jumped in my car and drove home, which took about 20 minutes. During that drive, I wrote the rest of the song in my head. When I got home, I immediately called Phil and said DUDE, I FINISHED THE FUCKING SONG! We jammed on it some more, but at one point, the song took on a really melodic, almost poppy nature, and it freaked me out. I was like I don’t know, eeeaaarghhh… I need to write some crazy lyrics for this. So I ended up writing a tragedy story about a guy who wants to commit suicide, his girlfriend helps him, and then she takes her own life too. And I thought, Okay, this can work."

One of my favorite songs on the new album. I think this is about someone wanting to die/having a bad life as it seems and saying things will be better when your dead? I think it has more meaning than that but thats what I get out of it. Good song anyways

I remember seeing an interview with Rob Flynn when he mentioned this song and to him how it's lke a Romeo and Juliet style story. A guy wants to die and his girlfriend helps him to commit suicide (1st half of the song is written from the point of view of this guy) and then in the last verse we see from the girlfriend's point of view, how she feels incredible guilt and kills herself also.

Yeah. I heard Robb wrote the lyrics in order to save the song from turning into a typical "MTV song", or something similar.

This is definately my 3rd favorite behind Clenching the Fists and Halo. I love this song. I agree with the "fucked up Romeo and Juliet" part, as I read it somewhere too.

This seems like a story about someone who, after years of loving them, accidentally kills the one they love. It may have been by accident or they lost control. So they finally realize what they've done and they mourn them, then he eventually blames God for what happened, as shown in the bridge. Great song.

I wish there was a bass tab for this. That section right before the solo has a sexy bass riff.
