Nobody Wants To Lyrics
Down on the ocean floor
That’s where I’m heading for
Hold on to a sinking stone
Until the worst is known
Nobody wants to
Think about it
Nobody wants to
Talk about it
Nobody protects you
They make it go away
Pretending that it’s all okay
Broken pieces on the ground
And everyone’s still turning ‘round
Nobody wants to
Think about it
Nobody wants to
Talk about it
Nobody protects you
Yeah
Are we losing something
We used to cry
We used to say why
For all I know
I might not get home
Well, I found out
If we opened it up
We could work this out
Nobody wants to
Think about it
Nobody wants to
Talk about it now
What you suspected all along
Everything he told you was wrong
And you can see it if you want
But nobody wants to
That’s where I’m heading for
Hold on to a sinking stone
Until the worst is known
Think about it
Nobody wants to
Talk about it
Nobody protects you
Pretending that it’s all okay
Broken pieces on the ground
And everyone’s still turning ‘round
Think about it
Nobody wants to
Talk about it
Nobody protects you
Yeah
We used to cry
We used to say why
For all I know
I might not get home
Well, I found out
If we opened it up
We could work this out
Think about it
Nobody wants to
Talk about it now
Everything he told you was wrong
And you can see it if you want
But nobody wants to

The song is called "Nobody Wants To".
I have a feeling that this song is about how we always are covering up mental illness and that we never want to talk about it...
This song is definitely about depression. The theme of the album feels like it's dedicated to Paul Hester (title, cover art), and being the first track, Nobody Wants To relates to what he went through.
Heartbreaking track- worth listening to and thinking about. I love it.
While I agree that this song is about how no one wants to deal with the issues of mental illness, it also seems to me to be a reference to the taboo of talking about suicide in New Zealand. Or rather it is the not talking about the issues that can lead someone to be suicidal, including mental illnesses such as depression.
The media does very little coverage of suicides, usually all the clue that it was a suicide is "police are not looking for anyone in their inquiry" or something like that.
A coroner recently came out criticizing this, and stating that while the media does not need to report how the person committed suicide, there needs to be more coverage on the events leading up to people committing suicide, so that we may better help others in the same situation.
I love this song, and I think it's one of Finn's best (which is saying a lot).
I agree that the song is about the stigma around suicide (and depression and mental illness more generally). There's also a comment on toxic masculinity (for lack of a better term) in the last stanza.
The form of the song is a bit unusual: A B A B C B D
Finn's decision to add a 4th musical idea at the very end of the song, coincides with the new lyrical idea and hints that this was an attempt by Finn to actually start talking about the problem of suicide/depression.
