I think it is more about someone that is still "haunting" him. Someone that he just can't get over. So, she is lost in a sense, but not necessary dead. The one that got away.

this song really touches me. it reminds me a lot of this summer. a guy i'd really gotten into had to move to berlin, so we put off a relationship, because we knew it'd hurt both of us in the end. he snuck over to my house a few nights, and my parents found out and grounded me for the rest of the summer. so i never got to tell him goodbye before he left in august. and i wrote him a letter before he left, and called a friend of mine, who told him to come pick it up at my house one night, and he never came, never got it. not to mention, he got a girlfriend before he left, and is still dating her now, even though they're separated by an ocean. (i wanted you, and i lost) and he's back in town now, but i have no way to get in touch with him, but god i'd give all my money for him to meet me here, even though he hurt me bad. and i feel really ridiculous, because i can't have him. but i still love him.
