Polynesia Lyrics
We're on the sea
We're in a ship and we are sailing by
All of the fish and all the octopi
We look them right into their octopi eyes.
I'm on the sea
I got a mermaid looking right at me.
I said, "Hey baby, why don't you come
up top? You can flip flop while we cruise the
Florida Keys."
Remember when we said, "you're gonna see us on a red ship sailing"?
We'll think of you on your solid ground.
We hope you'll think of us out here sailing around.
Sailing around. Sailing around. Sailing.
Polynesia, Polynesia, Polynesia, Oceania, oh New Caledonia.
We dropped the hook on the Capricorn.
Remember when we said, "you're gonna see us with a sailor's tan"?
We'll think of you and your stark white hands
Building your model ships wishing you were sailing around.
Sailing around. Sailing around. Sailing.
Polynesia, Polynesia, Polynesia, Oceania, oh New Caledonia.
We dropped the hook on the Capricorn.
We're in a ship and we are sailing by
All of the fish and all the octopi
We look them right into their octopi eyes.
I got a mermaid looking right at me.
I said, "Hey baby, why don't you come
up top? You can flip flop while we cruise the
Florida Keys."
We'll think of you on your solid ground.
We hope you'll think of us out here sailing around.
Sailing around. Sailing around. Sailing.
We dropped the hook on the Capricorn.
We'll think of you and your stark white hands
Building your model ships wishing you were sailing around.
Sailing around. Sailing around. Sailing.
We dropped the hook on the Capricorn.

Wrat's definition is pretty solid, but I still feel that that is oversimplifying a bit.
The overall message is the success that can be achieved when you take that leap of faith and venture out of your comfort zone. However, parts of the song clearly portray a definitive contrast between the narrator and the hypothetical people still stuck on the land. It is therefore plausible that the artist is making a comparison between themselves, who have stuck their neck out, and people who have preferred to remain safe and sound within their own domain, but miss out on many experiences. Of course it could just a comparison between an infinite number of groups or individuals, but I still think it's a comparison nevertheless.
Oh, and my favourite part of the song is the capricorn :P
@Honenhelm Haha I know what you mean, I like the way he sings capricorn!
My best interpretation of the song... It's about leaving the naysayers and complacent people and that kind of a lifestyle behind, and taking on the adventures that may at one point had been only talked about and nothing more (The people with their model ships wishing they were sailing around being old friends/naysayers). It's about turning thoughts and desires into action and doing something great, experiencing something that maybe be difficult as it is rewarding.
The "we look them right in to their octopi eyes" part is an indication that they are experiencing events first hand and in person that many people may only read about. I've never seen an octopus in person!
I think the song is a metaphor for touring, writing, performing and above all perfecting a musical style that is original and unique, despite what the mainstream and many people surrounding the project may have thought, and reaching a substantial level of popularity despite a very independent sound. Just a hunch. I could be way off.
I don't know what the meaning of this song is but I just feel like saying it's about experiencing something? I don't know but it's a fun song I like hearing them say the "Polynesia" part.
Pretty simple really. It's about realizing your dreams, even if it means taking a leap of faith off of solid ground.
