i hardly think its about a car or an oxygen tank.. i think the "machine" is one's body and death is what one waits for all their life.

As soon as I heard this song, I thought the old machine was a vibrator. The female singing in the song would be using that "old machine" as to save her virginity for a special person (ie. Schwartzman). Maybe (probably) that's just me thinking dirty, but could be applicable?
