Hmmm...I don't know if it really expresses the feelings for a fish... I think it's (only) an example for a really really good friend... I think it shows how it is to love a friend to death and then to lose him,because it destroys you too: "Showing how,you stabbed me" I like this song and although don't really know what he means with "Jack the Ripper" and "psycho under water" I listen to it so often :D Well,I think it means that the "goldfish" also had the control over him,just like a soulmate... But it's justa guess ;)

I guess, "you" is not the goldfish, but Mister K. He died, or left, or something alike...

Hmm, maybe Mister K didn't die, but he left by decision... That's why the first-person narrator now lost his trust in human relationships.

The goldfish was his replacement for the friend. He named him Jack the Ripper, because he thinks his friend's decision (to go) was heartless. Now he lost his last and best friend, as the goldfish (which brought him also back to mind his old friend Mr K.) dies.
I am not sure if the first person narrator is a woman, because then it would be a sad love story... but it's always difficult to imagine a heroine, when a man is singing the song. So it should be about broken friendship.
