Midsummer Classic Lyrics
I cut corners on the carpets now
I dance quarters on the windowsill
The summer left me to a different fate
This drastic urge will take some time to find its way
I run head on into traffic in the afternoon
I log the longest miles alone at night inside my room
Where all directions lead right back to me
All my ambitions swim like driftwood through my dark sea of sleep
And it will take some time
Yeah it'll take some time
But the dawn will come
Yeah the tide will rise
Her eyes swelled up in the bars soft lights
I drank and watched her laugh
And then we sang loud in the dying streets
And I was so drunk my heart floated like a feather in the breeze
I got so high off all the blinking lights
The colors painted in the night
Midsummer Classic blue and gold
The city casts its shadow
The kettle boil heads for a roll
Sundownings never getting old
And underneath this crooked moon
I can smell the night begin to bloom
The northern wind will change again
Then my geography will bend
Back and forth across the map until I reach the end
Back and forth across the map until I reach the end
And it'll take some time
Yeah it'll take some time
But the dawn will come
Yeah the tide will rise
Yeah
I dance quarters on the windowsill
The summer left me to a different fate
This drastic urge will take some time to find its way
I log the longest miles alone at night inside my room
Where all directions lead right back to me
All my ambitions swim like driftwood through my dark sea of sleep
Yeah it'll take some time
But the dawn will come
Yeah the tide will rise

And then we sang loud in the dying streets
And I was so drunk my heart floated like a feather in the breeze

It sounds like this song is about being depressed. The first verse is about being unmotivated.
In the 2nd verse he's sitting in his room dwelling on all his mistakes
I haven't really figured anything about the 3rd verse.
In my opinion the 4th verse is what ties the name of the band, the cover art, and pretty much the entire cd together. Incase anyone doesn't know Sundowning is defined as "The onset or exacerbation of delirium during the evening or night with improvement or disappearance during the day; most often seen in mid and later stages of dementing disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease." (http://cancerweb.ncl.ac.uk/cgi-bin/omd?query=sundowning&action=Search+OMD)
when he refers to "sundowning never getting old" and "my geography will bend", he's talking about drinking. When you get drunk your personality changes, and the next day you wake up as you were before you started drinking. Which explains the abstract shape on the cover, and the reoccuring theme of alcoholism throughout the cd.
and the chorus is about realizing that eventually you'll get over what ever is depressing you, it's just going to take time.
Best song on the album.
no question about it
The title of the song references the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, which is always referred to as the "midsummer classic" because it takes place during July each year.
Chris has said in an interview type thingy on BBC Radio One that this song is meant to be about him touring
I always thought that "my geography will bend" referred to travelling of some kind.
