Probably a fine, patriotic song, but associating it with selling pickup trucks has made it jingoistic, and totally ruined it for me.

I remember John Mellencamp talking about this song on NPR ~a month ago it is a call for the end to the culture wars

I really like this song, i did not like the GM used it in their commercials to sell cars.

I would like to point out that this song is very patriotic, the reason i say that is that John Melloncamp is telling us, as the poeple of this country, need to take it back and reign in the wild and mad spending polictians.

Return the country to the people, ever hear of the phrases "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. – That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,". you know from the Delcaration of Indepence.
