Karaoke Plays Lyrics

You write a list of things to do
To occupy your time that you could use
But in my mind it's never final
And when you sleep I try not to wake you as I leave

Oh, I waited up for you
But you didn't come back home
Oh, I waited up for you
Couldn't you come back home?

If someone gets run down
Karaoke plays somewhere in the background
But there is no explanation
What makes a grown man cry
Karaoke plays
If someone gets run down

We never did want the dawn to break
Decided from the sheets in which we laid
You know I changed my ways forever
The North Sea crashes through your dreams as I leave

Oh, I waited up for you
But you didn't come back home
Oh, I waited up for you
Couldn't you come back home?

If someone gets run down
Karaoke plays somewhere in the background
But there is no explanation
What makes a grown man cry
Karaoke plays
If someone gets run down

I came home, there were radio waves
I heard voices through the radio waves
I came home, you were nowhere to be found
The lights were on and the radio played
I came home, there were radio waves
A children's cry out through the radio waves
Every night we've got so much to say
I wanna hear all the things you did today

If someone gets run down
Karaoke plays somewhere in the background
But there is no explanation
What makes a grown man cry
Karaoke plays
If someone gets run down

The lyric;

'Every night we've got so much to say I wanna hear all the things you did today'

Could be refference that the person portrayed never listened to the person who has left, and just took them for granted, and now there gone, he misses them so...

Literally about somebody being knocked over, and the fact that the person they were with, cannot see them anymore. A song showing how precious life is.

the song Karaoke Plays is perhaps one of Maximo Parks most mellow and meaningful songs...

It is perhaps about someone who someone can't see anymore, how 'i waited up for you' but he couldn't ever see this person...

He talks about what makes a grown man cry, thats more of a statment than a question, he's saying this is what makes a grown man cry!

'We never did want the dawn to break Decided from the sheets in which we laid You know I changed my ways forever The North Sea crashes through your dreams as I leave'

Hes talking deeply about how he wishes his last moments with this person could have lasted forever.. and when he left, it broke both of them apart!

When I was at a gig at the Head of Steam in Newcastle, Paul Smith told us the song was about the boring and small things that go on in life, and take up your thoughts while something bigger is going on!

This leads me to make another interpretation of the song!

Maybe, the smaller picture is; someone getting run down (whether thats taken as run down by a car / some other form of transport, or just feeling run down), and karaoke playing (something you can often hear on the streets of the area!!)

and the bigger picture is the partner of the person focusing on the smaller things wanting to leave!

Just another thought :P
