Startin' With Me Lyrics
I had a one night stand with my best friend's baby sister
And to this day he still won't speak to me
I pawned my grandpa’s old guitar in college
For a case of beer and a tank of gasoline
I took a swing at my old man at Christmas
I never dreamed that it would be his last
I wish mom had rung my neck
When she caught me with them cigarettes
Which reminds me, I’m down to my last pack
If I had a dime
For half the things I did
That didn’t make no sense at all
I’d be living a little higher on the hall
If only I’d’ve known
That later on down the road
I’d look back and not like what I see
I’d’ve changed a lot of things
Startin’ with me
I called my brother everything I could think of
The night he wouldn’t bail me out of jail
I lost a job most folks ‘round here would die for
By laying out all night and raising hell
And I let a woman that I love slip through my fingers
Chalk another dumb move up to my foolish pride
I was there standin’ by the bed
When the preacher bowed his head
With the family, the day my grandma died
If I had a dime
For half the things I did
That didn’t make no sense at all
I’d be living a little higher on the hall
If only I’d’ve known
That later on down the road
I’d look back and not like what I see
Whoa, I’d’ve changed a lot of things
Startin’ with me
If only I’d’ve known
That later on down the road
I’d look back and not like what I see
Whoa, I’d’ve changed a lot of things

Well, this song sums it up for many of us. Perhaps not exactly word by word, but in the overall message. I know many of us look back and wish we could somehow change the past. That being impossible, we can only shake our heads, learn from past mistakes, and change our current selves.
perfect definition of the song... its kind of sad to look back on you life and want to change so much stuff... including yourself... but its good to learn from your mistakes
i love this song. It really hit home with me, because i am a smoker and im sure in the future its gonna come back to bite me in the ass. And everyone screws up, and there really isnt any changing that...but if youre able to walk away from your mistakes learning something good, then it was worth it...God bless
Nobody is walking around today that can't relate to this song in some way. We've all done things that do not make us proud, and one easy and instant example would be smoking, and all we can do is wish we could have had a second chance with the past and change things that way we'll never have that memory.
I really love this song. I think everyone lives with regrets. I can relate to this song so well.
eh, a couple changes:
"I'd be living a little higher on the hall" I'd be living a little higher up on the HOG.
"I was there standin' by the bed" I WASN'T there standing by the bed.
Beautiful song... who can't understand and relate to this...
