Indiana Lyrics
i'm glad i never lived next to the water,
so i could never get used to the beach,
and i'm glad i never grew up on a mountain,
to figure out how high the world could reach
i love the miles between me and the city,
where i quietly imagine every street,
and i'm glad i'm only picturing the moment,
i'm glad she never fell in love with me
for some the world's a treasure to discover,
and your scenery should never stay the same,
but they're trading in their dreams for explinations,
all in an attempt to entertain but
i love the miles between me and the city,
where i quietly imagine every street,
and i'm glad i'm only picturing the moment,
i'm glad she never fell in love with me
the trick of love's to never let it find you,
it's easy to get over missing out,
i know the how's and when's,
but now and then she's all i think about
i wonder how it feels to be famous,
but wonder is as far as i will go,
'cause ill probably lose myself in all the pictures,
and end up being someone i dont know,
so it's probably best i stay in Indiana,
just dreamin' of the world as it should be,
where every day is a battle to convince myself,
i'm glad she never fell in love with me
so i could never get used to the beach,
and i'm glad i never grew up on a mountain,
to figure out how high the world could reach
where i quietly imagine every street,
and i'm glad i'm only picturing the moment,
i'm glad she never fell in love with me
and your scenery should never stay the same,
but they're trading in their dreams for explinations,
all in an attempt to entertain but

Thank you, Jon. You've made me appreciate Indiana a little more. However Anderson is still terrible.
Imo this song isn't really about Indiana... just involves it, but its so heartfelt... brilliant song =)
a man living in the countryside of indiana, allowing the scenery and comfort of his hometown distract him from the fact that his heart has been broken ("...where everyday is a battle to convince myself i'm glad she never fell in love with me")
Midwest is best.
This song totally grew on me from the first time I heard it. 'cbearwantshoney', lol, has it...that's basically it. The sweet and almost home-y sound of the piano in the background is what makes this song for me. I can see a guy sitting in his old Indiana home, playing piano and singing a slow, melancholy song all alone. "the trick of love's to never let it find you, it's easy to get over missing out, i know the how's and when's, but now and then she's all i think about"
awww. 'tear'

this song is totally about me & my best (guy) friend he's from indiana. we go to school in the city (new york city, that is). and he fell in love with me... and i didn't return the favor.... and i'm sure he's just sitting in indiana, right now, trying to convince himself that he's glad he's not with me....
this song is beautiful. it makes me miss indiana.
Anderson, IN is the worst place to live in the world. But, I enjoy this song nevertheless.
I'm not so sure this is a song pertaining to a woman he once loved.
The theme of the song is that it’s easy to get over something you don’t know anything about. “It's easy to get over missing out.” This is why he’s glad he never grew up on a mountain (he’d love it) or why he never grew up next to a beach (he’d love it).
It’s about how he’s glad to be ignorant, in a sense, and to have this grandiose fantasy of what a Hollywood type of life would be like. “I'm glad i'm only picturing the moment.” It’s his justification in case he never does make it in the world. He’s lying to himself and saying he’s glad fame never fell in love with him. That he was never a good fit for the hustle bustle.
In the last part, he’s openly admitting this and wondering aloud what it would be like to be famous. Yet he seems to at least appreciative of the fact that he also never had the opportunity to be caught in Hollywood’s trap, chewed up and spit out (Lindsay Lohan, for example).
The “she” that never fell in love with him is an audience. The people that bring fame.
@cubbyblues i really like this interpretation. i think another part of it is he's almost half given up and not taking any more chances. also, he's dreaming of what life could be like if he would take chances.

"so it's probably best i stay in indiana"

just keeping to himself, in "indiana" and not venturing out to take chances.
