Darling Nicotine Lyrics

Who let the bad in?
Who let the bad in?
Who let the bad in?
Who let the bad in?
Who let the bad in?

Darling nicotine, you want me back, back, back.
And everything I wanted in you lack, lack, lacked.
The feelings that I've felt when i said i needed you,
But i don't recall that you would ever say it back.

Instead of suffering, all of the kids just kept shaking,
But not for me, because their hearts are bigger than they used to be.
And all you see is love coming out, but none of us are free.

Darling nicotine, you want me back, back, back.
And everything I wanted in you lack, lack, lacked.
The feelings that I've felt when i said i needed you,
But i don't recall that you would ever say it back.

Who let the bad in?
Who let the bad in?

And darling nicotine, you want me back, back, back.
And everything I wanted in you lack, lack, lacked.
The feelings that I've felt when i said i needed you,
But i don't recall that you would ever say it back.
Back..

And darling nicotine, you want me back, back, back.
And everything I wanted in you lack, lack, lacked.
The feelings that I've felt when i said i needed you,
But i don't recall that you would ever say it back.

it's "who let the BAD in?"

and "everything I wanted in you lacked"

I looked it up in the actual lyrics booklet for the album. :)

I think this song has a double meaning to it, about being in a relationship with someone and smoking. When he says "Darling Nicotine"

When your smoking your so addicted to it, you need it.- "the feelings that i've felt when i said i needed you" but it doesnt need you - "i don't recall that you would ever say it back" until you decide to quit - "you want me back, back, back"

Sometimes you can be in a relationship with someone that is one sided. You need them and love them so much, but they couldnt care less, until you leave them. Then they want you back

But i don't know, thats just my interpretation of it. :)

ew i hate this song. its not that pretty and very repetitive. and this person i know ruined it for me which is pretty sad. i love brighten, but not this song anyways, i think this song talks about how he was or is like a druggie. cuz i think nicotine is a drug? anyways, and he thought if he did something good would come out of it but "everything i wanted in you lacked..." yeah... even though its addicting, nothing good will come out of it

It's about cigarettes. Nicotine isnt really a drug. But its the reason you get physically addicted to cigs.

what are they teaching these kids in health class nowadays?

Hm, I suppose you can take this literally, and have it be about drugs, but my first thought was that it was about girl. Cliche, typical perspective--I know-- but that's how I chose to see it :)

It could be more about drugs with the line about "all of the kids just kept shaking", but then it could just be about frustrations in general, I.E. peer pressure, losing yourself, unrequited love, suicidal thoughts, growing up, poverty, failure, etc. He could also be talking about the crowds at concerts, like instead of feeling lonely ("suffering") you go out and rock for the music with society's growing tendency of 'feeling' more ("shaking, but not for me, because their hearts are bigger than they used to be"). You never know when Brighten is being blunt or deep; they're precarious and I love that :)

I think I just came up with a new perspective on this time, like maybe the musician is feeling let-down by the musical career he chose from complications and stuff, and being brought down with high expectations. People enjoy it, but he still feels as if he isn't 'Free', maybe? And music can be therapeutic, but it won't solve problems. Going through a hard time obviously, ah I need to stop thinking.

I'm actually fond of this song; it's kind of blues-ey and then the whole band punches their way through near the end. I think it's powerful, and stagnant at the same time, for those who just kind of feel 'nothing' at times.

Haha, on the right side of my screen, there's an advertisement for 'Pot Addiction Books' as i'm typing. Maybe that's a sign? Haha :)

Brighten never ceases to amaze me.

Justin has never done drugs!! He hates the smell of smoke. Why would you even say this. If you LOVE them so much you wouldn't be so mean?

I don't think it's that mean to hypothesize that a song called "Darling Nicotine" could be about cigarettes or drugs, I mean really. Besides, it might not be about a personal experience; I'm sure everyone has at some point had a close friend who smoked or did drugs.

Anyway, I personally think it would be easy to interpret this song both literally and metaphorical and it's up to the listener to take from it what they will, just as is the case with pretty much all lyrics. :)

i really doubt this song is literally about nicotine, i interpret it as being addicted to something or someone that is bad for you, generally nicotine is categorized as being extremely addictive, i think its a metaphor for maybe even a relationship that is completely one sided, hence this verse

"the feelings that i've felt when i said i needed you, but i don't recall that you would ever say it back"

i could be wrong, but thats how i perceive it.

I'm pretty sure this song could be about quitting smoking. If I remember correctly (I could be wrong) Justin used to smoke cigarettes but has since stopped. And this could be the song he wrote about it.
