All My Friends Lyrics
Everybody's goin out tonight
And everybody's hangin out tonight
It's alright
Listen to them
Show when they learn how to lie
You can sing along with them if you try
Holdin the spoken world up
I need it. I need it. I need it.
She's got a neck like a Saturday paper
You read it fast before the Sunday mass
Take it back it's nothing
it's nothing like it talks
Don't listen to me baby if you wanna survive
You did it you did you did it wrong.
Collapse
It's evident to me
Tonight
All the friends are strangers.
I'd like to take my story
To some place the don't know me
Creatures come out of the bars
Talk is small but you talk to Paul
Sold sex on Bird Cage walk
Boys are drinking and on the docks
Union man. I'm your friend
I need you when you listen to me
Weigh sand Buy Sand glass track
Closing off close off close off
OPEC dreams stock market close on the rock
And roll scale
Stereo
No more partridge family dreams to the home land
Divorce countries
And everybody's hangin out tonight
It's alright
Show when they learn how to lie
You can sing along with them if you try
I need it. I need it. I need it.
You read it fast before the Sunday mass
Take it back it's nothing

Don't listen to me baby if you wanna survive

This is about going out to bars and not really connecting with "bar goers".
SM "needs it", he needs the music, beers, girls, whatever. Bar and Pubs have always gone hand in hand underground music, but lack of graspable and examinable meaning makes it a "broken world".
Liars; peoples who will extend the truth (or outright fabricate) seem to be a focus of disdain. However it is empathized how anyone can fall into that trap of trying to make a social connection at any cost.
"Listen to them Show when they learn how to lie You can sing along with them if you try"
Finally the song draws to the conclusion that a social connection can't be made at a social club/place/bar because of the aforementioned reasons. The song slows, like a let down and the protagonist seems to have made his (or heeerrr) way out of the environment, to an industrial dock area and away from any entertainment district. He then seems to feel a desire to engage with a "union man", perhaps somebody is drinking with friends ( comrades in labour with strong connections and emphatic understanding of each other. Not bullshit Artists).
SM had previously described a desire to take his tale to them, the tale the whole song describes up until this point.
Finally we are walking on the beach and feeling something certain, "wet sand, feet in the wet sand".

I love that. All my friends are strangers.
"Holdin the spoken world up I need it. I need it. I need it."
IS
Holding this broken world up."
Hopefully someone will see this post and be able to help me...I noticed that the last post was 5 years ago! Okay so I'm trying to find meaning in the lyrics of this song because my beloved nephew of 22 years posted this song on his Facebook page about 15 minutes before he took his own life. From what I can gather, the song is about not fitting in with a mainstream crowd, but beyond that, I don't know. Can anyone help me to understand why someone might listen to this right before committing suicide? I'm looking for deeper meaning here. He didn't "kill himself because nobody liked him". There has to be more.
@lalaeddie So so sorry to hear about your loss.. I can only guess, but maybe your nephew felt a connection to the line "all my friends are strangers". I feel this because I'm on the autism spectrum and connecting to people can feel impossible sometimes, even among my friends. Maybe he didn't necessarily feel like nobody liked him, but rather he felt disconnected from people, even ones he liked and who liked him. Personally, I can empathize with that feeling. Again I'm sorry about your nephew, I send loving thoughts to both of you as I write.
