Under the Waves Lyrics

Under the waves, deep in the drift
I can feel the salt upon my skin.
Under the waves, falling away
I no longer see the rings of rain.

I want to feel it, if just to know it's true
Look me over- it's just a surface wound.
Don't pay to fight it; can't change the color blue.
All I wanted was to impress you.

Under the waves, caught in a dream
Lover, can you hear me breathing?
Under the waves, now that I'm giving up
I can let the current carry me.

I want to feel it, if just to know it's true
Look me over- it's just a surface wound.
Don't pay to fight it; can't change the color blue.
All I wanted was to impress you.

And if I catch myself crying
For things I cannot control
I'll head on back to the wall
Where tears are invisible.

Under the waves, I know who I am
I don't need to spin the story.
Under the waves, down in the deep
I no longer see the rings of rain.

Hello, I have attempted since first hearing this selection to more fully understand the wording so that I can get a better understanding of what the song is telling me.

Thank you 'humantoaster' for your words. Your clarity is better than mine. The second to the last paragraph, third line and last word is not 'wall' but 'water.' In other words, one's tears are not seen if they are in the water.

It is not a person but what animal or being is presented here.

Does anyone know why there was such a big deal not to release the original lyrics by Pete Droge?

Thank you in advance,

Beautiful song explaining why some people decide to live their lives in a very passive way. After some kind of traumatic situation he decides to elope. Drowning can symbolize both literal suicide or a state in which he no longer cares about anything in his life. At the bottom there is no fear of tommorow, since its the current (life) which makes all decisions for him. Being under the waves gives him freedom from troubles and sadness people have to face everyday, because just as the rain, the reality of life cannot reach him in his shelter. Besides, it's alright even if he brought some of those bad emotions with him, since in the water his grief is meaningless and mingled with everything around.
