I think it is about him trying to forget someone from his past (a lover), he is trying to drown his sorrows with his favorite pass time and drink. This song is quite sad, but i still love it that much.
Mmmm... I don't really like red wine all that much, but I do adore this song.
This version is about 8 billion times better than the UB40 version. At least 8 billion. (I hate the UB40 version, in fact, although I knew it for years before I knew this original version.)
I'd say this song has something to do with wine...Just a wild guess.
I grew up with the UB40 version, so, hearing this was quite disturbing lol.
