Losing Your Memory

I think its about this girl that was in a car accident and doesn't believe that she is going to survive. The police are to slow and she almost dies. He then says he would have loved her no matter(I picture him waiting for her to wake up in the hospital next to her bed).

The "Losing your memory now" could be about how she was taken to the hospital but she had brain damage and now has amnesia.

He takes her to all the places both went to before she had amnesia. The beach and such. It is not the same without her and since she doesn't remember him he can't really do anything about it. He is still with her trying to get her to remember him but still can't. His "dream" is that she will remember him.

It then goes on to say "wake up little girl" This makes me think that he wants her to remember but can't. And the "Just remember who I am in the morning" He hopes every day that she will remember him.

So yeah! Those are my thoughts!

I always thought this song was a response to the movie "Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind".

"Where have you gone? The beach is so cold in winter here And where have I gone? I wake in Montauk with you near Remember the day 'Cause this is what dreams should always be I just want to stay I just want to keep this dream in me"

Those lyrics vaguely outline some serious points in the movie.

"On a Valentine Day, Joel Barish feels the impulse of going to Montauk instead of working. After spending the cold day on the beach, he meets Clementine Kruczynski on the train station and they have a crush on each other. Joel and Clementine do not know that they were mates in the past. Joel has just erased Clementine from his memories when he found that Clementine did exactly the same, when their relationship ended. However, along his erasing process, Joel becomes astonished when he finds that he still loves Clementine and he does not want to lose her, fighting for keeping the memories of their moments together instead." ^ Direct plot summary from IMDB.

Either way, I love this song, and I love Ryan's voice.

So, when I first started trying to figure out what this song means, the only thing that came to mind was that it was about a person losing their memory in a dementia/Alzheimer’s way, but that didn't make much sense to me, mostly because of the line "Wake up, it's time, little girl." Little girls do NOT get Alzheimer's. So I found this site and formulated a better interpretation after reading everybody else's. "Call all your friends Tell them I'm never coming back 'Cause this is the end Pretend that you want it, don't react" The song is about a guy and a girl who are in a relationship. They have a HUGE fight and break up, the girl leaving, driving off into this huge thunder/lightning/wind/rain storm.

"The damage is done The police are coming too slow now I would have died I would have loved you all my life" The girl ended up crashing her car. Maybe the guy finds out or goes after her or gets there before the police and it seems to be taking forever for them to get there. Or maybe the police and ambulance get there too slowly because of the storm and she doesn't get medical help soon enough, so she's worse off than she could have been. The guy is really upset and feels that it's his fault that she ended up crashing the car and is in this condition. He wants to take back all that he said. He wishes that it was him instead of her in the accident.

"You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory now You're losing your memory now" Because of the accident, the girl has suffered some sort of brain trauma that's left her with amnesia.

"Where have you gone? The beach is so cold in winter here And where have I gone? I wake in Montauk with you near" The guy tries to help her regain her memory, but it's just not working. The line "where have you gone?" reflects how she isn't herself anymore. The guy goes to some place that was really special to them, aka the beach, except it's winter, to kind of think and just get away from it all. He falls asleep and has a dream about her and the 'good ol' days' before she lost her memory.

"Remember the day 'Cause this is what dreams should always be I just want to stay I just want to keep this dream in me" The guy wants to remember the day or days that he dreamed of. It's all he has left; the girl is gone, in a way. He doesn't want to lose her in his memories, too.

"Wake up, it's time, little girl, wake up All the best of what we've done is yet to come Wake up, it's time, little girl, wake up Just remember who I am in the morning" He wants the girl to "wake up," or regain her memory. They have their whole lives ahead of them and she needs to remember so that they can live them to the fullest. And, of course, he wants her to remember who he is and everything else.

Does she ever regain her memory? Do their lives ever go back to normal? Who knows?

It seems to me that the girl rejected him somehow, and so he killed her. "The damage is done, the police are coming too slowly now, I would have loved you all my life". Seems maybe she's dying slowly and he's saying if he can't have her, no one can. Also fits with the losing your memory part, if she's slowly dying and losing consciousness. I hope it wasn't meant to be so morbid and I'm misinterpreting it, but that's what I thought first time I read it :\

First of all, it's "And tell them I'M never coming back" not you're. So, in this case, I guess it's about girl who did something horrible. Something that terrible that he's not here with her when he was ready to love her all his life "I would have loved you all my life". I believe she killed him. It makes sense. Because later there are words "Where have you gone, The beach is so cold in winter here" which can be understood as he is somewhere but not Earth. And the words "Wake up, it’s time little girl, wake up. All the best of what we’ve done is yet to come" are said when he forgives her of what she'd done. She regrets and lives in that moment when she lost him and he wants her to live on.

This song is mesmorizing. It can really work on so many different levels. I'm really disapointed there are no one's comments on here to read yet, because I want to know what other people think.

If you just read the lyrics it seems as if maybe it's about someone who runs away. "Your losing your memory now," may refer to her, after time, forgetting her home (settling in to wherever she now lives) and what ever it was she was running from.

In the song, he seems to be challenging her to come home, and telling her he misses her, even if she's slowly forgetting him.

It could also be that in the song he's talking to a friend that doing something harmful to themselves (maybe using or something) and they're slowly drifting away. This is how I see it, makes me think of my best friend.

"Call all your friends And tell them you're never coming back Cause this is the end Pretend that you want it Don't react The damage is done The police are coming too slow now I would have died I would have loved you all my life" Could be him saying, sort of in anger and hurt at what the person is doing, that that person is deserting their friends.

"You're losing your memory now" would be referring to memory loss from the drug.

"Where have you gone, The beach is so cold in winter here" is about them being "gone" rather than physically gone.

"Remember the day Cause this is what dreams should always be I just want to stay I just want to keep this dream in me" is saying to remember times before getting into all this trouble, and that's how it should be. That's what dreams should be.

Then the verse about waking up and "the best of what we've done is yet to come" is about getting out of the trouble and living for real.

Alright now someone else has got to comment now.

I love this song, and I tried to figure out what the creator thought when he wrote it. And as I read the comments here, and read the lyrics again, bang! it just hit me. So here is my theory(:

"Call all your friends And tell them I'm never coming back 'Cause this is the end Pretend that you want it Don't react The damage is done The police are coming too slow now I would have died I would have loved you all my life"

Guy did something that is against the law (or is accused with sg), girl is pissed and disappointed, obviously still loves the guy, but she's hurt. The guy is devastated, he would have done anything for the girl, but now his life is ending as he knows it.

"You're losing your memory now"

The chorus either means that the girl wants to forget, or simply is forgetting the good times, and in her eyes he's becoming only a criminal.

"Where have you gone? The beach is so cold in winter here And where have I gone? I wake in Montauk..."

Guy comes out of jail, of course they went separate ways. But he couldn't forget the girl, still loves her.

The rest of the song can mean a happy ending: girl no matter how hard she tried couldn't forget him either, they meet "I wake in Montauk with you near" and "You're losing your memory now", meaning she's now forgetting all that happened, and they are starting over "Just remember who I am in the morning"

But it can be all just a dream, so a sad ending.

I just want to focus on “Losing Your Memory” because in past interviews you said you wrote it about Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. But in recent interviews you’ve said the song has taken on new meaning. So can you explain the evolution of it?

It wasn’t so much about the film. I use movies to inspire ideas, colours, and emotions. I call myself a lazy filmmaker sometimes because I write three minute songs and not two and a half hour movies. So it was inspired, I sat with a pen and paper and wrote the words. But I was getting tired and exhausted emotionally, so I was determined to write a song not so much about me. I wanted to do something a little more secular. And then, sure enough, when I finished writing that song, I looked at the lyrics, and it felt like I was looking in a mirror. It was so real to my life and evident that it was from my heart and soul. It’s very in-tune with the cover artwork of 11:59, actually.

Because it’s at Montauk and you say “I wake in Montauk with you near”? Yeah, so really, if there’s an image for “Losing Your Memory” it’s the album cover and the insert stuff when you get to see it.

i would be interested to know ryan's bio because it seems he's dealt with loss or death, especially in these songs..

i could see how eternal sunshine of the spotless mind would play into this because it's such a mix, but i personally think this, along with last train home are to someone who has died, and this just shows the mix of emotions and thoughts when you lose someone.. i don't know, maybe i'm wrong.. but that's what i've thought when i've heard this song.

to me its about losing a love and scared that your gonna lose the memory of that person not being around as much.
