I fell in love with this song when it came out and I love it still. This song reveals what Ian Anderson can do when he has a subdued song. From his mature voice here emanates love and kindness. How very poetic: “…came a thousand miles just to catch you while you’re smiling…” That, my friends, is a superb sentiment. Had I not known who Anderson was, and that he looked like a bridge troll from fairy tales, it would have been easier to believe that I was listening to a loving husband. In this most exquisite piece of music he sounds very paternal and conservative. This song sparkles and deserves to live.
This song is gorgeous. Probably my favorite from Stand Up. It's terrible how such beautiful music is overlooked because of the crap that comes out these days. The lyrics are simple, but the way he sings it is lovely, and instrumentally it is wonderful too. Who wouldn't want to hear that just their smile means something to someone?

This one keps meaning a lot to me, just as it did to an idealistic teenager in the 70's to a near 50er now. The merging of Ian's flute with the orchestral strings works well without beint overly sentimental. The notion that honesty and faith in others and one'se self: "You're not seen, you're not heard, but I'll stand by my word, came a thousand miles..." still resonates for me as I think of the people truly loved in my life. Nice rythym guitar throughout.
Not so much idealistic, but fantastic. To dream the impossible so beautifully.

I can't go back in time but I still draw inspiration here for the future.
I'm sure there are many resources to draw idea*s from, but in my childhood I guess a lot of mine were somewhat limited to lyrics. I'm just glad there was someone out there to say something that could really touch me and make me dream for.
My favorite song of all time and my personal anthem. It's whimsical and airy but also earthy and playful. Full of romance, winks, poetic flourishes and the like. This is how someone in love sounds. Whether it's in love with a person, an idea, a place, a time or something else.
