Thankfully Lyrics

That's just like me when everything's gone wrong
To latch onto something that's stable as good
I needed an anchor for my sinking ship
It's just like me to attach it to my heart instead

I think this was
A test to see how long I could hold my breath.
I understand, I gotta' remind myself
That even at my worst, I can keep my head.
Alone I stand
United we fall apart
One union under God, but not for long, thankfully.

That's just like me , when everything else fails
To go for the gold, the unattainable goals.
Enoughs not enough when you're beat to the floor
As heart aches not heart ache enough anymore.

I think this was
A test to see how long I could hold my breath.
I understand, I gotta' remind myself
That even at my worst, I can keep my head.
Alone I stand
United we fall apart
One union under God, but not for long, thankfully.

When we were young we never cared
And now we're scared of jumping in
Like we've forgotten how to swim
But if we try and if we tread then we can teach ourselves again
'Cause its worth the chance we take
When we were young we never cared
But now we're scared of jumping in
Like we've forgotten how to swim
But I think that we should try
And if we tread
And if we never take another dip again
We'll never know the choice that failure brings

I understand, I gotta' remind myself
That even at my worst, I can keep my head.
Alone I stand
United we fall apart
One union under God, but not for long,
One union under God, but not for long, thankfully.

in the first verse it's "to latch on to something less stable, less good"

Silly Kids! Bayside got into an accident on tour and the drummer in the band died. This album was made after that happened. So throughout the album he talks about death, and god. When he says:

"When we were young we never cared And now we're scared of jumping in Like we've forgotten how to swim But if we try and if we tread then we can teach ourselves again 'Cause its worth the chance we take When we were young we never cared But now we're scared of jumping in Like we've forgotten how to swim But I think that we should try And if we tread And if we never take another dip again We'll never know the choice that failure brings"

This means that when we were young, we never cared about god or religion. but now we are older and scared of jumping back into it. but if we try we can get back into it because the message god has for us is worth the chance we take. and if we never choose to listen we will never know what other options we had besides failure.

I disagree that's about "regaining religion" or something.

I do believe it's about a failing marriage that's on the brink of a divorce. Anthony, the singer/writer, is divorced. Union under god sounds like marriage. Alone I stand, Divided we fall fall apart- Not For long, Thankfully sounds like Divorce. If anything it's another step towards disregarding religion.

Just a couple tiny corrections. I took a while trying to figure this part out because it is my favorite part of the song.

As for the meaning of this part, personally I see it as a way of saying that we need to take the chances we get.

When we are young we don't take very many chances with unfamiliar things and when we grow up we forget how to take chances altogether. (Like we've forgotten how to swim) I think that its saying that we need to learn to take those chances (teach ourselves again) because life is too short. I also think that its saying that no matter the result of the chance you take, you will never know if you dont take it. Its worth it even if you fail terribly. ('cause if we never take another dip again we'll never know the joy the failure brings)

To summarize, I think it's promoting Carpe Diem. Seize the day! Life is too short to hesitate
