One Good Thing Lyrics

urn that tv off, now, baby
i’m so low i don’t even sing
tell me something ‘bout my country
tell me one good thing

cash and elvis, cain and abel
down in memphis, trading hands
big girls dancing on the tables
dancing for the band

put that paper down, now, baby
i’m so low, i don’t even sing
tell me something ‘bout my country
tell me one good thing

king and malcolm, lamb and lion
setting alabama free
thirty thousand angels flying
from montgomery

switch that station off, now, baby
i’m so low i don’t even sing
tell me something ‘bout my country
tell me one good thing
tell me one good thing

Cover art for One Good Thing lyrics by Anaïs Mitchell

This is a perfect song to end the whole album with. The album is filled with sorrow and stories of people in pain. She starts off with "Before the Eyes of Storytelling Girls" as a strong political song and ends with "One Good Thing", which basically is about someone who's just tired of the lies told by the media and politicians. So turn off the TV, she's so low she doesn't even sing.

It's like she's summarizing the whole album. And the ending expresses the same feelings as the listener after listening through the album: "is there anything good about this world or this country? Tell me one good thing" is basically the feeling we all have.
