Stay Lyrics

I been sittin' here staring
At the clock on the wall
And I been layin here praying
Praying she won't call
It's just another call from home
And you'll get it and be gone
And I'll be crying
And I'll be beggin you baby
Beg you not to leave
But I'll be left here waiting
With my heart on my sleeve
Oh for the next time we'll be here
Seems like a million years
And I think I'm dying

What do I have to do to make you see
She can't love you like me

Why dont you stay
Im down on my knees
Im so tired of being lonely
Don't I give you what you need
When she calls you to go
There is one thing you should know
We dont have to live this way
Baby why dont you stay

You keep telling me baby
There will come a time
When you will leave her arms
And forever be in mine
But I don't think that's the truth
And I don't like being used
And I'm tired of waiting
It's too much pain to have to bare
To love a man you have to share

Why dont you stay
Im down on my knees
Im so tired of being lonely
Don't I give you what you need
When she calls you to go
There is one thing you should know
We don't have to live this way
Baby why don't you stay

I can't take it any longer
But my will is getting stronger
And I think I know just what I have to do
I can't waste another minute
After all that I've put in it
I've given you my best
Why does she get the best of you
So the next time you find
You wanna leave her bed for mine

Why dont you stay
I'm up off my knees
I'm so tired of being lonely
You cant give me what I need
When she begs you not to go
There is one thing you should know
I dont have to live this way
Baby why dont you stay

I know most hear this song as if she is the mistress.....I did at first too, and hated this song! Then I discovered that my husband of 12 years had created a separate life for himself with another woman--for 3+ years before I found out. I heard the song in a different way and it spoke volumes to me--I was the wife, but had been made to feel like the "other woman"...and I heard the song from that stand point. After, wanting to try and work things out...because we have kids...I had a light bulb moment--realized I'm better than anything he could offer and my life is better without him!! Me and my kids are better for the decision I made!

This song puts that emotion that an "other woman" feels in perfect perspective. The first time I heard it, I buried my face in my hands and sobbed.

UGH lets drop the whole cheating issue for a second, and everyones moral judgments along with that.

This song, on the surface, is about cheating. Yes. She`s the other woman.

However, this song is about SO MUCH more than that. She thinks she loves him, sure. But she loves him out of desperation, and a deep sense of loneliness.

This song isnt about WHY she loves him or why she has to be with him. Not at all. Its about her loneliness and sadness. I sympathize with her because of the loneliness she feels. I think that`s why she got with him in the first place. He eased the loneliness (this may seem like a bit of a stretch, however, this is how I interpret this song).

I agree with your desperation and loneliness angle! It is so true that most "other women" are both desperate and lonely when they persue a relationship with a married man. You can also add in there that she is selfish - not thinking of anyone but her needs.

i will be the first to admit that i'm not exactly the biggest contemporary country fan. i happened to be flipping through channels one day a few years back and caught this song. i was completely moved with the whole idea of the song and the video. interpret it anyway you like. i agree for the most part with clover25. while the basis for the song is from the "other" woman to the man whom she is having the affair with, it's not a "cheating" song. it's dealing with the extreme emotions of BEING THE OTHER WOMAN. it's an up and down battle. it doesn't matter whether you agree with her for being in the affair, you don't know how and why she got into it. i agree that there is a loneliness and desperation that attracted her to this situation, but, i do feel the protagonist does love the man, no matter how wrong it is [i've given you my best why does she get the best of you].

you don't have to agree with what she's doing to emphathize and it is especially unfair to just assume she's just a "homewrecker". she' not a monster. she's human, which is obvious through the raw emotions of the desperation of her wanting him to stay with her, then being angry of continually being told he's going to leave his wife. then, finally getting the strength to bipass whatever love she does have for this man and tell him to "stay" with his wife. she's never going to get what she wants [i.e. him]

it's truly a very powerful song.

I heard about this song from my younger cousin, who said she had a "cute" song she wanted me to hear. She played the video for me On Demand, and I broke down in tears, it was that amazing. Especially when she started crying; I just completely lost it.

I don't normally go for country music, and I detest songs about cheating, but this song just blows me away. Simple, straightforward, and no explanation needed. Listen to it back-to-back with Faith Hill's Cry and I swear you'll be sobbing for a good half hour, at least!(They just happen to be on my playlist in that order. Ugh.)

cruzntopless, while I don't condone cheating(been cheated on WAAAY too many times to make that leap), there ARE exceptions to every rule. Now, if the woman went into the relationship KNOWING "her" man was married, then, the ho got what she deserved. However, what if, like so many situations, she didn't know he was married until it was WAY too late to back out of? Like they'd been together a couple of years with him successfully hiding his marital status up to that point? Or if he told his lover that he was married, but separated or in the middle of a divorce, then strung them both along until she realized the truth of the situation? And while you and I might have left as soon as we realized something like this was going on, a woman in love wants to believe the best in her man. And it's so much easier for the "other woman" to believe a man's lies: He's not in love with his wife, but staying for the sake of the kids, or because she's sick(physically or mentally), or because she'd ruin him financially or the millions of other lies that can fall from a man's lips so very easily. As long as one or both women involved don't start "nagging," the only one truly happy in that situation is HIM.

Anyway, awesome song, phenomenal video, excellent artists!

I can't believe this song doesn't have any comments on it. This song is pretty obvious. She's with a married man, and she wants to know why she can't give him what he needs. She wants him to stay with her whenever his wife calls. At the end, she says that he isn't giving her what she needs...so she says that the next time he thinks about coming to her bed...stay with his wife. Err, obvious much? This songs simple and amazing.

This Was The First Song I Ever Heard By Sugarland and it mad me want to hear other songs as well. It Is A Very Simple Song But Written Very Well. I Love It

i NEVER thought i would become 'the other girl.' and until about a year ago, i vowed this would never be me. i have been cheated on too many times to be able to do this to someone else. then when i found myself falling in love with a man with a girlfriend, it scared the shit out of me. he told me daily he was breaking up with her. DAILY. i even sat in his car with him when he went inside to her place to get his stuff because it was over. sadly, he never grew a pair and continued seeing her until 2 months after i ended it with him. now that she's out of the picture, he is crawling back to me like a piece of shit. sorry, baby, it's just too little, too late.

when I first heard this song, I loved it instantly. it's about a woman who's with a man who's married and she's wondering why he can't just stay with her. He keeps going back to his wife after he's with her. She feels as if she can't give him what he needs and then in the end she finally just says to stay with his wife because he can't give her what she needs.
