This song is so gorgeous, it sounds like it belongs in a David Lynch movie! Her voice reminds me of the girls from Cocorosie, with less oddity.
Anyway, Nicole Atkins is from Neptune City, NJ. I think this song is pretty simple. It's about going back to the place you are from and realizing it's not quite how you remember. It's like that with places from childhood--they are so different in your mind, so big and exciting, and then you see them with a more jaded, adult mind and realize that they are dingy, common places. She wants to see it with a new eye and love it again but she can't. She feels like it's a death in a way and doesn't want to go back again.

the old theme that 'one can't go home again' sounds like she came home for a loved ones funeral and got bummed out .maybe if she comes back for a wedding she will be more perky by the way why is netune city called a city wheres the skyscrapers subways etc but they have kellys and the river and a few good pizza places now that i think about it go elsewhere nicole and play your old phish cassettes. pax!love your music

Ahh this song is so good, I saw her live at Bonnaroo and she's amazing. Really cute too.
I feel like everyone sees this song in there own perspective of the world . It's so amazing When I hear this song I think of her being somewhere else that's not earth but like space , another planet or even on one of neptunes moon ! She is very amazed about the perspective of the world and what humans can do and achieve . That maybe one day that we could get so advance that people wouldn't die , "cemetery song would not sing " she loves earth but loves space too and she's alone and she likes it that way , just admiring the beauty of the universe . Maybe she will learn to miss earth , where bad things happen like dealth but yet so beautiful wonders there. She will go to earth again because it's so alive and maybe she wouldn't want to be alone anymore.. like on a deserted moon of Neptune where bad things don't Happen just admiring beauty and existence.
